  • Missão

    The Legal Aid Society provides free legal services to more than 8,000 low income residents across a broad range of issues in civil, family, juvenile, and mental disability law. On behalf of the poor, LAS also acts as a private attorney general in class-action and major-impact cases that challenge abusive conduct by large corporations or governmental entities.

    The Legal Aid Society provides representation in state and federal courts and administrative agencies, at both the trail and appellate level; it also engages in legislative advocacy on behalf of the poor.

    The Mental Disability Laws Division operates the GAIN (Guardian Advocacy, Instruction, and Networking) Project.

    LAS recruits, trains, and supervises approximately 300 volunteer guardians who are appointed by the Probate Court to serve nearly 600 adults with cognitive disabilities, including Alzheimer's Disease, chronic mental illness, down Syndrome, dementia, mental retardation, or traumatic brain injury. Volunteer guardians act as advocates to help ensure that wards receive adequate care and services.
