People can’t depend on rights that systems won’t protect. We fund human rights defenders abroad and work to change laws at home.

Across Texas and around the world, the people most affected by injustice often have the least power to change the systems that shape their lives. We fund grassroots advocates across the globe while lobbying for human rights in Texas. Because we also do the work ourselves, each side sharpens the other. This work is not just something we fund. It’s something we live.

Programs/Services:

Texas Policy and Advocacy

We advocate for human rights in Texas, translating research into policy action.

Texas has no shortage of research on health, immigration, and the justice system. Much of it sits in journals and never reaches a committee room. We move that evidence, and the priorities of the communities it describes, to the legislators who write the laws. We take positions on specific bills and lobby for them directly. We build and join coalitions that advance those issues, and we publish our findings so the public can follow along. That work starts with mapping the Texas human rights landscape and setting the policy priorities we will pursue. We are building this in the open, and we say so plainly rather than overstate what we have done so far.

International Grantmaking

We fund grassroots organizations advancing human rights in their own communities, starting in Latin America.

Abroad, funding is where we add the most value. Many grassroots organizations hold deep expertise and trusted relationships but have little access to long-term support. We offer multi-year funding when we can, with reporting that partners can manage in their own language and on their own timeline, and a relationship that lasts beyond a single grant. We treat partners as the experts on their communities and support them as their work evolves.

Coalition Building

We bring advocates together across Texas and Latin America so they grow stronger as a network.

Connection is one of our largest contributions, at home and abroad. In Texas, we build and join coalitions that link community priorities to decision-makers. Many organizations working on these issues in Texas are limited in how much legislative work they can take on. We are built to do that work with them: tracking bills, testifying, and staying through the session. That is the role we are building for. Across borders, we connect our partners to each other and to our own advocacy, so lessons travel in both directions. A tactic that works for a partner in Latin America can shape a Texas campaign, and the reverse. We share what we learn in the open.
