    The Matthews Heritage Museum provides educational and engaging interactive experiences for all ages, but particularly children. The museum strives to nurture a healthy respect for the forward-thinking of the early settlers and help guests reflect on the business environment, lifestyles, and cultures of those early Matthews townspeople.

    Step back in time as you enter the award-winning Matthews Heritage Museum, housed in the 1879 Massey-Clark House, one of the oldest structures in historic downtown Matthews.

    Embark on a journey into the past within the Commerce Gallery, where you’ll delve into the rich history of farming and the early days of the railroad. Envision the bygone era of cashing checks at the Bank of Matthews, and catch a glimpse of the original bank interior on display. Immerse yourself in stories from the telephone switchboard while gazing at our antique crank phone and switchboard.

    Both young and old will find delight in exploring the Lifestyles Gallery, where you can transport yourself to a time before electricity and running water were commonplace. Discover the pivotal role of schools within the community, and picture the significance of porches as central hubs of daily life, especially during sweltering summers. Learn what was different in the kitchen at the turn of the century.

    Unveil the vibrant tapestry of local history within the Community Gallery, where you can uncover the many activities that unfolded at the neighborhood drug store. Investigate the early setup of a doctor’s office and listen to charming anecdotes about the local pool. Marvel at the captivating display of Outen Pottery, hand-thrown pots exquisitely crafted from local clay.

    The Lifestyles and Community Galleries feature snippets from the Matthews Remembered and Outen Pottery DVD.

    As you stroll past the hallway panels, you’ll gain invaluable insights into the early days of Matthews—including the historic African American community of Crestdale—completing your immersive experience at our remarkable local history museum.
