22plus believes in a world where adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities are equipped with the resources and tools they need to thrive. By working with those we serve and those who support them, the 22plus centers the lived experience of our community. From there, we identify barriers from which to build and amplify solutions.
There is a support gap for people with IDD as they age out of most services when they turn 22. During the transitioning stage, they and their caregivers are left without direction, lost in a world they don’t know, without the support they grew up with.
Most of the services are created for children, missing the reality that the life expectancy of adults with IDD is now closer to that of people without disabilities, more than ever. There is a support gap of approximately 20, 30, or 40 years that we hope our work can help bridge.
What is a pivotal moment for everyone, when adults without disabilities are imagining and building their lives, those with IDD face the system inequities and their painful reality. They don't have the tools to design a fulfilling life, and they don’t have the support or access that others do.
22plus approaches this centering our community and their lived experience. The work is born from the community, not just for them. We want the adults with IDD to be part of the conversation and co-create solutions that help bridge the gap. We incorporate a comprehensive view of the whole, with different components building a more complete life design opportunity for our adults with IDD.
