Our vision to have a society free from violence that recognises the needs and rights of women and youths.
Our vision to have a society free from violence that recognises the needs and rights of women and youths.
The Women’s Rights Initiative (WORI) is an action-oriented organisation working with women and youth in the Eastern Region of Uganda. Through programmes in human and women’s rights awareness, advocacy, and education we promote leadership development, sexual and reproductive rights, and economic empowerment. We are based in beautiful Jinja, in Uganda, where we have recently constructed the first ever women's shelter with all of the necessary services to enable women to regain self-esteem, safety, dignity and, above all, have access to justice.
Our mission is to protect the most vulnerable and those needing legal, medical and psychological support; to empower women and youth to advocate against violence through human rights education, awareness and advocacy, as well as to provide them with skills and information to strengthen their capacities and visibility in society.
As WORI is a small, grass roots, Ugandan run charity our volunteer ethos is extremely important. We aim to avoid creation of a narrative of victims that the western world is saving, whilst trying to engage with ideas of sharing skills and time, as well as telling the story of survivors in Uganda which, like every country, has good and bad aspects.
