(Adult Family Home setting)
We are seeking a patient, engaging volunteer to provide companionship to an older adult who is visually impaired and would greatly benefit from consistent social interaction and conversation.
About the Participant
- Blind, with mild memory deficits
- Can experience some anxiety but is eager to connect
- Enjoys clear, descriptive communication
- Interests include:
- Talking about sports (avid sports fan)
- Reading and discussing braille books
- Outdoor walks using a white cane
- Learning about surroundings and engaging with the environment
Volunteer Role
- Provide in‑person companionship
- Engage in conversation about sports, books, and life experiences
- Practice clear, descriptive communication (introducing yourself when approaching, describing surroundings)
- Accompany the participant on short outdoor walks, when appropriate
- Offer reassurance and support through over‑communication and consistency
Volunteer Preferences
- Comfortable working with someone who is blind
- Patient, reliable, and a good conversationalist
- Enjoys sports or learning about them (helpful but not required)
- No gender preference
- Flexible scheduling (weekly or bi‑weekly visits welcomed)
