Volunteer Opportunity: Companion for Visually Impaired Older Adult (In‑Person)

(Adult Family Home setting)

We are seeking a patient, engaging volunteer to provide companionship to an older adult who is visually impaired and would greatly benefit from consistent social interaction and conversation.

About the Participant

• Blind, with mild memory deficits
• Can experience some anxiety but is eager to connect
• Enjoys clear, descriptive communication
• Interests include:
  • Talking about sports (avid sports fan)
  • Reading and discussing braille books
  • Outdoor walks using a white cane
  • Learning about surroundings and engaging with the environment

Volunteer Role

• Provide in‑person companionship
• Engage in conversation about sports, books, and life experiences
• Practice clear, descriptive communication (introducing yourself when approaching, describing surroundings)
• Accompany the participant on short outdoor walks, when appropriate
• Offer reassurance and support through over‑communication and consistency

Volunteer Preferences

• Comfortable working with someone who is blind
• Patient, reliable, and a good conversationalist
• Enjoys sports or learning about them (helpful but not required)
• No gender preference
• Flexible scheduling (weekly or bi‑weekly visits welcomed)
