Who We Are Looking For:
Scars Into Stars, Inc. (SIS) welcomes individuals from all backgrounds who believe every survivor deserves to be seen, heard, believed, valued, and treated with dignity and respect. We are seeking passionate, mission-driven individuals who are willing to contribute their expertise, leadership, and time to help strengthen and grow our organization.
Survivors, your voice and lived experience are valued assets that would greatly contribute to the SIS board.
As a newly established nonprofit organization in its pre-operational phase, we are building a strong leadership foundation and are looking for individuals who are committed to helping create meaningful impact for survivors, families, underserved communities, and marginalized groups throughout Boston and Massachusetts.

Working Board Commitment & Structure
Scars Into Stars, Inc. is seeking dedicated individuals to serve on a Volunteer Working Board of Directors. This is a working board position, meaning board members provide governance leadership while also actively supporting the organization's development, sustainability, and growth.
Board members should expect to:
- Attend monthly board meetings
- Participate in approximately one-hour meetings
- Meetings may be held virtually or in person
- Meeting times will generally be scheduled during evening hours to accommodate varying work and personal schedules
- Virtual meetings will be conducted through Zoom
- In-person meeting locations will be determined based on securing convenient meeting spaces within Boston and surrounding Massachusetts communities, including community spaces or suitable public locations
- Contribute professional expertise, leadership, and collaborative support
- Assist with strategic planning, organizational development, fundraising, and community engagement initiatives as needed
- Serve an initial one-year commitment
- Be eligible for a maximum two-year term
We are seeking individuals who are dependable, compassionate, collaborative, and willing to help establish a strong foundation for meaningful and lasting impact.
Board Roles & Responsibilities
Secretary
- Record accurate minutes of board meetings
- Maintain official organizational records and documentation
- Assist with board communications and organizational recordkeeping
Treasurer
- Oversee the financial affairs of the organization, including budgeting, financial reporting, and financial oversight
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations and best practices
- Provide regular financial updates to the board
- Support financial planning and advise leadership regarding financial decisions
Vice-Chairperson
- Provide direct support to the Executive Director/Board President in facilitating meetings and discussions
- Serve as an advocate and representative of the organization
- Assist with implementing board decisions and strategic initiatives
- Serve as a liaison among board members
- Collaborate with leadership to help establish organizational direction and growth strategies
- Support fundraising and community engagement efforts
The Three Pillars of Governance
Duty of Care
Each board member has a legal responsibility to actively participate in organizational decision-making and exercise sound judgment while carrying out their responsibilities.
Duty of Loyalty
Each board member must place the interests of the organization above personal or professional interests while serving in a decision-making role.
Duty of Obedience
Board members are responsible for helping ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws while remaining faithful to the mission and purpose of the organization.
