    About Carter Burden Network (CBN)

The Carter Burden Network (CBN) supports older New Yorkers in living independently, safely, and with dignity. For over 50 years, we’ve provided programs that foster connection, purpose, and community. Just as we value the older adults we serve, we also believe in the power of experience — and the meaningful contributions that come from staying active, engaged, and connected.

    About the Opportunity

We welcome volunteers who bring prior experience in Human Resources, office administration, operations, or other structured, detail-oriented roles—and who are excited to keep their skills sharp while learning new ones. This opportunity is especially well-suited for individuals who enjoy organized work, problem‑solving, and supporting people behind the scenes.

Whether you’re a retired or semi-retired professional, a returning parent re‑entering the workforce, an office manager looking to expand into HR, or an older adult seeking meaningful ways to stay engaged, you’ll find a supportive environment where your existing strengths are valued. You don’t need to know everything on day one; what matters most is your reliability, curiosity, and willingness to learn. I’m just as willing to teach as I am to learn from you.

    How You’ll Contribute

    • Support employee onboarding and offboarding processes
    • Assist with leave administration documentation and tracking
    • Help organize, digitize, and maintain confidential employee files
    • Support recruitment activities (posting jobs, scheduling interviews)
    • Support Leave Administration Process
    • Provide general administrative support to the HR function
    • Assist with developing SOPs

    Who We’re Looking For

    • Prior experience in Human Resources, office management, or administrative roles
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Comfort working with confidential information
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • Reliable, thoughtful, and interested in meaningful work

    Why Volunteer With Us

    • Use your professional experience in a meaningful, valued way
    • Stay engaged and connected in a supportive workplace
    • Flexible scheduling that respects your time and availability; 7-14 hours weekly commitment
    • Be part of a mission that supports older adults across NYC
    • Work alongside a collaborative and appreciative HR team

    Additional Requirements

    • Volunteers must be able to successfully complete a background check prior to starting.

    Equal Opportunity Employer

The Carter Burden Network is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values the experience and perspectives of people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from individuals of all ages and do not discriminate based on any legally protected status.

    How to Apply

    Instructions for Volunteers

To express your interest, a simple letter is all that’s needed. Please share:

    • The strengths and experience you bring
    • The areas where you’d like to learn, grow, or contribute
    • Why this type of structured, behind‑the‑scenes work appeals to you

A resume is optional—helpful, but not required. What matters most is your desire to learn, your reliability, and your comfort using (or willingness to quickly learn) basic technical tools. Documentation is a core part of this role, so volunteers should be comfortable working in Microsoft Word, Adobe, SharePoint, and familiar with (or open to learning) SMART goal frameworks.

We welcome volunteers with HR experience, office management backgrounds, operations skills, or anyone returning to the workforce who wants to keep their professional skills sharp while contributing to a mission-driven organization.
