Cemetery Cleanup Volunteer - Help Preserve a Historic Black Cemetery

Do you believe that sacred spaces deserve care and respect? Are you willing to lend a hand to help protect a powerful piece of Black history? We need your support.

Cobb Bethel AME Church, founded in 1863, is the steward of one of Atlanta’s oldest African American cemeteries-a sacred site where generations of Black landowners, veterans, and community leaders are laid to rest. The cemetery does not have a paid maintenance staff, so we rely on volunteers to help preserve the dignity of this space through regular cleanup efforts.

As a Cemetery Cleanup Volunteer, you'll assist during scheduled cleanup days with tasks such as:

• Mowing grass and clearing brush or vines
• Picking up litter and hauling debris
• Trimming tree limbs or overgrown vegetation
• Sweeping walkways and cleaning around grave markers
• Removing fallen branches or other storm debris

This is an occasional, as-needed volunteer role. Volunteers will be contacted when cleanup days are scheduled and may choose to participate based on availability.

No prior experience is needed-just a willingness to get your hands dirty and a heart for preservation. Come solo or bring a group-we welcome all who want to serve and preserve.
