    Descrição

    We are seeking a dedicated Volunteer Genealogists to support our one-week Youth Genealogy Camp for 8th/9th graders, (July 20th - 24th with two different shifts. Choose the morning block 10AM - 11:30 AM CST or / 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. CST). The 24th will consist of an all day field trip to downtown Nashville 10:00 A.M. - 2 p.m. - with a lunch break. You do not have to be available for the field trip, it is optional.

    Volunteers will guide students in researching their family histories based on a curriculum already formed [it is guided materials with notes], help interpret historical records, and support the development of each student’s final family tree project (presentations will be held Saturday evening online). This role is ideal for individuals passionate about genealogy, history, and empowering youth through discovery and storytelling.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist students in building and researching their family trees using online and archival resources - based on the curriculum provided
    • Help interpret historical documents such as census records, land records, and bills of sale
    • Provide one-on-one guidance to students throughout the research process
    • Support students in preparing and refining their final presentations
    • Ensure a respectful, engaging, and supportive learning environment
    • Collaborate with camp staff during Field Work Day at local historical and archival sites (optional onsite day/not required)

    Qualifications

    • Experience in genealogy research (personal, academic, or professional)
    • Familiarity with research platforms such as FamilySearch or similar tools
    • Strong attention to detail and research skills
    • Ability to communicate clearly with youth in an encouraging and accessible way
    • Passion for history, cultural preservation, and community impact

    Requirements

    • Must pass a verified background check prior to participation
    • Ability to commit to the full duration of the one-week virtual camp [10AM - 11:30 AM CST or / 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. CST block]
    • Willingness to work collaboratively with staff and other volunteers
    • Comfortable working with youth in both virtual classroom and field settings (8th/9th graders)
