Position Title: Director of Strategic Communications

Position Summary:
The Director of Strategic Communications will lead the development and execution of Safe Haven Space’s communications strategy, helping to elevate the organization’s visibility, storytelling, and external engagement. This role is ideal for a versatile, “jack of all trades” communicator who can operate across both strategy and execution in a growing nonprofit environment.
The individual in this role will have the opportunity to shape how the organization communicates with partners, supporters, and the broader community, while building and leading a small communications function over time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and refine the organization’s overall communications strategy in collaboration with the Executive Director and leadership team
- Create and edit content across platforms, including social media, newsletters, website updates, and outreach materials
- Translate program activities and organizational priorities into clear, compelling narratives
- Support messaging for partnerships, fundraising efforts, and external engagement
- Help guide and organize social media presence, including content planning and consistency of voice
- Assist in positioning organizational leadership for external visibility opportunities
- Recommend and implement simple communications systems, templates, and workflows to improve consistency and efficiency
- Collaborate with program and operations teams to ensure alignment between communications and program delivery
- Support recruitment of additional communications volunteers as needed
- Help define roles and responsibilities within the communications function
- Provide guidance, coordination, and light management of communications volunteers or contributors
Time Commitment:
Approximately 5–10 hours per week, with flexibility depending on organizational needs and ongoing initiatives.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Strong writing and editing skills across multiple formats
- Ability to think strategically while also executing independently
- Comfort with both independent work and light team coordination
- Interest in building and shaping a communications function
- Experience or interest in nonprofit, human services, or mission-driven work
- Familiarity with social media, newsletters, and basic communications tools
