Director (Volunteer), Amelia Douglas institute for Métis Culture & Language Board

Are you passionate about connecting Métis people throughout the province with their culture, heritage, and Michif languages?

Does supporting the centre of Métis culture and language resources and programming in British Columbia excite you?

The award-winning Amelia Douglas Institute (ADI) celebrates and uplifts Métis culture in British Columbia through educational exhibitions, programs, and research. We are seeking volunteers to join our Board of Directors with experience in fundraising and non-profit governance.

The ADI is a registered charitable organization working to establish itself in governance and financing to be sustainable alongside and outside the support of the Métis Nation BC.

The ADI’s showroom and exhibition space opened to the public in January 2024 and is located at #300 13401 108 Ave Surrey BC. Our digital space contains language resources, exhibition records, and artist collectives and can be found at https://ameliadouglasinstitute.ca/

We have two one-year and one two-year Directorships available, each with the possibility of extension for a further two years.

Board Member Responsibilities and Commitments

As a member of the ADI board, you would be responsible for the following:

• Uphold the ADI’s mission, vision and mandate (detailed on our website)
• Providing strategic planning, oversight and guidance to support the ADI’s growth and long-term operational success.
• Act honestly and in good faith in the best interests of the ADI and uphold the ADI’s bylaws.
• Attending and participate in virtual Board Meetings (frequency roughly monthly) and Annual General Meetings. At this time, all board meetings will be held virtually and travel will not be required.

Board Member Eligibility

If you wish to put your name forward to our nominating committee, please take note of the following eligibility requirements:

• The ADI shall endeavor to ensure the composition of Directors will reflect a broad range of experiences, expertise, and shall, where practicable, be representative of all MNBC regions.
• Directors must possess knowledge of Métis culture, history, material arts, and/or Michif languages.
• Experience within the museum, culture, heritage, charitable sector, marketing, education or other relevant sectors is an asset.
• Prior board experience is an asset.
