The mission of Urban Teaching Corps is to develop a corps of talented, passionate and committed educators, who are prepared to dedicate themselves to teaching urban youth and closing the achievement gap.
Our country has a desperate need for great schools and to have great schools, we must increase the number of excellent teachers -- particularly excellent teachers of color -- working in underserved communities. Urban teacher residencies provide a solution. During residencies, college graduates apprentice in a classroom with an experienced educator. While teaching, they also participate in a rigorous training program, including pursuing a Masters Degree in Education. The development of teachers should be as thoughtful and methodical as residencies and apprenticeships for other professions. Teachers-in-training need mentors, support from their schools, and supported opportunities to teach. Their professional development should be infused with practice, reflection and rigor.
