Checkbook is a
nonprofit,
Consumer Reports-type publication
and website that evaluates, and advises consumers on how to deal with, local
consumer service companies and professionals—auto repair shops, hospitals,
plumbers, veterinarians, stores, and many other types of services. We are
always looking for new types of services to evaluate and for innovative ways to
do our evaluations.
CHECKBOOK, founded in
1974, is published in seven regional editions. It is unique in that it is
nonprofit, accepts no advertising or other payments from companies it
evaluates, and uses rigorous evaluation methods ranging from surveys to
undercover price shopping to analysis of available data such as millions of
medical records to measure hospital death and complication rates.
