    About This Role

    Pocketbook is seeking a Senior Accountant who will be responsible for maintaining the general ledger, and executing monthly analysis of the statement of activities and the statement of financial position for a variety of Pocketbook clients. They should be experienced in nonprofit financial management, and passionate about helping our clients and partners win. The Senior Accountant will provide occasional support to members of the finance team with payroll, A/P and A/R, and client corporate card management. The Senior Accountant is expected to be a creative problem solver and excellent communicator; someone who can explain complex accounting processes to organizers, campaigners, and organizational leaders while representing Pocketbook and our clients with outside vendors and partners.

    Compensation: The starting salary for this role is $82,000-$90,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This is a full time, exempt position. Information about Pocketbook’s employee benefits can be found here.

    Role Location: This role is fully remote (within the United States) with the expectation of attending team retreats and conferences 2-3 times a year. We currently have staff in Pacific and Eastern time zones.

    What does success look like?

    • High standards for financial statement reviews are implemented and completed on deadline.
    • Clients are constantly informed and aware of the organizational financial lifecycle and their responsibility in it, from bill pay to bank reconciliations to 1099 and 990 filings.

    What questions is this role responsible for answering?

    • How, and on what recurrence, can we gather feedback, refine, and efficiently streamline our close processes?
    • Are we requesting the financial information we need to complete our responsibilities on the correct timeline’s, with the correct software systems?

    Key Responsibilities

    • Accounting and Bookkeeping - 80%
      • Supervise accounts payable and receivable processes for clients.
      • Prepare, enter, and review monthly transactions in QBO accounts.
      • Enter necessary adjusting entries to prepare books for monthly bank reconciliations, and quarterly reviews.
      • Assist with maintaining accounting integrations with ancillary software’s (payroll, corporate credit cards, insurance vendors, etc).
      • Assist with quarterly intercompany and annual closing processes.
    • Reporting, Tax, and Audit Preparation - 20%
      • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of client budgets and forecasts.
      • Assist with audit preparation for clients, as necessary.
      • Prepare and file 1099’s and w2’s for clients annually.
      • Assist clients with financial policy development and internal controls.
      • Assist with regular project reporting and analysis of project related financial reporting.

    Prior Experience

    Must Have

    • 2+ years of full cycle accounting experience.
    • 3+ years of nonprofit accounting experience.
    • 2+ years of experience with QuickBooks Online and Google Workspace.
    • Working knowledge of GAAP.
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance or business related field, or equivalent work experience in accounting or related field and training.

    Nice to Have

    • Masters of Finance or Business Administration.
    • CPA or CPA eligible
    • Prior knowledge of 501(c)(4), 527 organizations, multi-entity nonprofit accounting, fiscal sponsorship, or fund accounting.
    • Experience with nonprofit and or foundation grant reporting requirements.
    • Experience with the following software: Keeper, Ramp, Karbon, Airtable, Transaction Pro, LiveFlow or Sage Intacct.

    Work Conditions

    Pocketbook Strategies is a remote workplace and works with clients across the United States. PBS employees are expected to work at a location of your choosing, whether at home or elsewhere, that is conducive to performing one’s job responsibilities.

    Typical working hours may vary depending on job responsibilities and outside commitments and obligations. Employees are expected to work Monday- Friday for a minimum of 4 hours each day during traditional business hours (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) in Eastern Standard Time, regardless of the employee’s location.

    In order to perform their assigned job responsibilities, PBS staff must be able to communicate with colleagues and clients via phone and internet, including conference and video calls, as well as written communication, such as Slack and email. Therefore, all employees at PBS must work in an environment with reliable internet access and phone service.

    Travel Expectations

    Although the majority of PBS work is conducted virtually, PBS employees will be expected to travel to in-person staff gatherings at least once a quarter (up to 4 times per calendar year). Organization-wide travel and in-person gatherings will account for appropriate safety precautions re: COVID-19 and other health or safety concerns.
