Job Description

The Director of Education at the Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) advances environmental literacy and supports the Colleges mission by leading educational programs, developing curricula, and fostering community partnerships. This position oversees a range of environmental education initiatives, facilitates professional development for teachers, and engages with public schools, community partners, and internal stakeholders. The Director manages program staff and student interns, ensuring the delivery of impactful, experiential learning.

Essential Duties SummaryEssential Functions

• Develop and teach environmental education programs aligned with New York State Science Standards (NYSSS).
• Manage the programs staff and interns, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality delivery of educational content.
• Serve as a liaison to Yonkers Public Schools Board of Education and other educational institutions to coordinate collaborative programs.
• Represent CURB with partner organizations including the Beczak Environmental Center, Harbor Educators Group, the Department of Conservation, Groundwork Hudson Valley and participate in external conferences and events such as the NYSOEA conference and REED Steering Committee
• Collaborate with Sarah Lawrence College faculty and other internal stakeholders on grant initiatives and curriculum integration.
• Schedule and manage field trips, professional development workshops, and other education-related events.
• Maintain records of program activities, including financial documentation, attendance, and evaluation data.

Additional Responsibilities

• Lead CURBs efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within environmental education programs.
• Manage community garden operations, including plot assignments and resource maintenance.
• Support social media outreach, newsletters, and visitor engagement to promote program visibility.
• Oversee educational displays, materials, and equipment to maintain effective learning environments.
• Assist with facility upkeep including aquarium maintenance.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Physical and Cognitive Requirements

• Moderately sedentary, involving periods of sitting and computer use.
• Frequent verbal and written communication required.
• Capacity to organize and synthesize detailed information.
• Frequent standing/walking/use of lab and field research tools.
• Occasional lifting and handling of lab equipment.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in environmental science, education, or a related field.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental education, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Knowledge of ecology, biology, and river and estuary environments.
• Ability to work effectively outdoors in varying weather conditions with people of all ages.
• Strong communication and organizational skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with educational frameworks including the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the Learning Cycle, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the 5E Model.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Hudson River animal identification and experience with animal husbandry
• Fluency in Spanish and experience working with diverse communities.
• Experience leading diverse volunteer groups and supporting DEI initiatives.
• Experience cultivating community working with a diverse range of volunteers
• CPR/First Aid Certified, or willingness to obtain upon hiring
