Summary The primary function of this position is to prepare all of the materials needed for the undergraduate microbiology laboratories as well as select materials for the general biology laboratories. This postion also supports the department's graduate research program through the operation and maintenance of the Microbiology Preparations facility equipment. Finally, this position is responsible for the treatment and disposal of all infectious waste generated by the department following all Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) and Ohio Revised Code regulations.
Essential Functions - Preparation & set up for undergraduate microbiology laboratories (prepares media, cultures and reagents; maintains classroom laboratory equipment; maintains stock cultures; prepares class handouts, overheads, and lab practical's; keeps an inventory and orders supplies for microbiology classes.)
- Treats Infectious Waste generated by the Biological Sciences classes and research labs following all OEPA regulations. Trains students and researchers on proper handling of biohazards. Creates and maintains all records pertaining to treatment (autoclaving) and disposal of infectious waste. Keeps up to date with current regulations and maintains the Department's Facility Management Plan as required by the OEPA. Treats infectious waste from other units on campus when requested
- Maintains and operates the Microbiology Preparations Facility equipment used to prepare materials for undergraduate classes and faculty research labs. Instructs faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in the proper operation of the equipment in the facility.
- Hires, trains and supervises work study students to work in the Microbiology Preparations Facility. Responsible for scheduling, assigning tasks, guiding, and monitoring work of students.
- Coordinate EPA inspections and preventive maintenance of autoclaves with outside vendors.
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications The following Degree is required:- Bachelor's Degree. Degree must be conferred at time of application
The following Experience is required: - 1 year - Microbiology and/or laboratory experience.
Additional Information Knowledge, Skills, Abilities- Knowledge of microbiology, skill in preparing materials for classroom laboratory experiments, knowledge of regulations for handing different types of biohazardous waste, experience running and maintaining autoclaves, experience with process of treating waste, experience supervising student workers, experience dealing with regulatory agencies.
