Overview
We are seeking a doctoral student Research Assistant to support writing, publication, and applied research efforts focused on public scholarship, policy-relevant analysis, and place-based inquiry. This role is ideal for a PhD candidate who is an exceptional writer, highly detail-oriented, and interested in contributing to real-world impact through public-facing and academic work.
The Research Assistant will play a critical role in editing, tailoring, and submitting Op-Eds and journal-bound pieces, contributing to Global Disruptors briefs, and assisting with targeted research across prioritized locales.
This position is well-suited for doctoral students seeking experience in publication pipelines, translational scholarship, and applied research production.
Core Responsibilities
- Op-Ed Development & Submission Support
- Revise and refine Op-Eds drafted by the principal investigator
- Tailor Op-Eds to meet specific outlet submission requirements, tone, and audience
- Assess publication fit and positioning for each Op-Ed
- Support submission, follow-up, and resubmission processes
- Target outcome: Support the publication of 5–6 Op-Eds during the placement period
- Journal & Academic Publication Support
- Review draft academic or journal-oriented pieces for:
- Adherence to journal submission requirements
- Structural coherence, clarity, and argument strength
- Support revisions and resubmissions based on editorial or reviewer guidance
- Track publication requirements, timelines, and formatting standards
- Target outcome: Support 2–3 journal or academic approvals during the placement
Global Disruptors Briefs
- Contribute substantively to Global Disruptors briefs by:
- Expanding analysis for prioritized geographic locales
- Integrating literature, data, and contextual insight
- Supporting synthesis across policy, social, and economic dimensions
- Assist with sharpening narratives and analytic framing for decision-maker audiences
Additional Research Support
- Conduct targeted literature reviews and background research as needed
- Support synthesis, fact-checking, and citation management
- Assist with other research tasks aligned with project priorities
Required Qualifications
- Current doctoral student (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, public policy, planning, education, public health, humanities, or related disciplines)
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to adapt writing for different audiences (public-facing and academic)
- Strong familiarity with academic publishing norms and submission processes
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and handle multiple drafts concurrently
