    SENIOR TRIAL COUNSEL

    PRIVACY & RESPONSIBLE TECHNOLOGY DIVISION

    PUBLIC PROTECTION & ADVOCACY BUREAU

    (Boston Office)

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a highly motivated attorney who is passionate about public service to join her office as Senior Trial Counsel in the Privacy and Responsible Technology Division (PRTD). The Division, which is part of the Attorney General’s Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau, investigates and litigates cutting-edge issues in emerging innovations. The Division works to address unfair or deceptive use of consumer data, to maintain data security and privacy, and to address technologies that may manipulate consumers, including youth.

Primary Duties: The Senior Trial Counsel will oversee, strategize, and pursue litigation and investigations surrounding data security, data privacy, and online or digital abuses, including misrepresentations concerning artificial intelligence or machine learning, and dark patterns that manipulate or exploit users. Duties will include independently leading investigations and enforcement actions; assisting other AAsG in their investigations and litigation matters; as well as learning new industries and technologies, collaborating with other state and federal enforcement entities, and negotiating resolutions that serve the public interest. The Senior Trial Counsel will be expected to contribute to the development and growth of all staff in the Privacy and Responsible Technologies Division and, at times, may be called on to assist with high-profile litigation or investigations across the Office.

    Position Requirements:

    • Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or eligible for admission in short order.
    • At least seven (7) years (which may include judicial clerkships) of complex litigation experience, including motion practice, discovery, handling expert witnesses, and trial, preferred.
    • Familiarity with Massachusetts consumer protection laws and data security laws, preferred.
    • Clear and persuasive written and oral communication skills and legal research capabilities.
    • Effective organizational skills, time management abilities, and attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and collaborate on differing matters in a fast-paced environment with teams whose members have various experience levels and skill sets.
    • Sound and thoughtful judgment and decision-making skills.

While expertise in matters concerning technology is not required, a candidate should demonstrate an eagerness and ability to learn complex concepts and effectively explain them to a court, jury, or the public.

Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date. Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as ‘Counsel’ and must be admitted to the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment.
