Miami-Dade County

Miami-Dade County (MDC) is home to a diverse community of 2.8 million residents, utilizing a workforce of 28,000 employees. MDC has two “tiers” or levels of government: city and county and has 34 municipalities. The FY 2020-21 Proposed Budget is balanced at $9.048 billion. The county operates under a Strong Mayor form of government with the Mayor elected countywide. In this role, the Mayor serves as the elected head of County government and is not a member of the Board of County Commissioners (BCC). He is responsible for the management of all administrative departments and for carrying out policies adopted by the BCC. The BCC (legislative body) consists of 13 members elected from single member districts. Approximately 424 square miles (excluding bay and coastal waters) of the County are within the urbanized area, while the total county area currently covers a total of 2,431 square miles, bound by Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Everglades National Park to the west, the Florida Keys to the south and Broward County to the north.
