U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

  • Misión

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed auxiliary service of the United States Coast Guard. It is comprised of close to 30,000 members who volunteer their time to support the operation of the Coast Guard, promote and improve recreational boating safety, and provide trained crews and facilities to enhance the safety and security of US ports, waterways, and coastal regions. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary was authorized by Congress on June 23rd, 1939. This act authorized the Coast Guard to use civilian volunteers to promote boating safety on the nation's waterways. On October 19, 1996 Congress greatly expanded to allow members to assist in any Coast Guard mission authorized by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Members of the USCG Auxiliary volunteer their time to support the operation of the Coast Guard, promote and improve recreational boating safety, and provide trained crews and facilities to enhance the safety and security of US ports, waterways, and coastal regions. We are America’s Volunteer Guardian’s.

The Ipswich Flotilla of 1 st District Norther Region of the USCG Auxiliary directly augments Newburyport’s Coast Guard Station Merrimack River, and supports operations in the North Shore Massachusetts area. Our AOR is from Newburyport through to Essex, but we notably are active in Ipswich, Essex, Rowley, Newbury; and occasionally Hamilton/Wenham, Topsfield, Boxford, & Georgetown.

The Ipswich Flotilla members live, work, and boat in the Ipswich Bay, Essex Bay, Plum Island Sound, and Merrimack River areas. Ipswich is also home to Crane’s Beach, Sandy Point State Reservation, Great Neck, the Ipswich River, & Plum Island Sound.
