UC Berkeley School of Public Health

The first school of public health west of the Mississippi, the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health was founded in 1943 on the Berkeley campus. It is one of 50 schools accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. The UC Berkeley School of Public Health improves population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through radical collaborations to meet health needs and achieve health equity, preeminent education that challenges convention and develops diverse leaders, and transformational research on the major public health threats and opportunities of today and tomorrow.

The School's faculty, consistently noted as among the leading scholars in their respective fields, comprises approximately 150 investigators. Among our faculty are Institute of Medicine members, American Association for the Advancement of Science fellows, Fulbright fellows, and National Academy of Sciences members. The School enrolls approximately 700 graduate students a year, as well as educating about 425 undergraduate students through the upper-division public health major. The School's more than 18,000 graduates can be found working throughout the world, both in the public and private sectors.

Relatively small but responsive, the School of Public Health has a history of accomplishing big things. Its location in the Bay Area, adjacent to Silicon Valley, and its position in California, on the Pacific Rim and sharing a border with Mexico, gives it a mandate and opportunity to embrace diversity, champion social justice, and innovate for healthier people, locally and globally.
