Weld County School District 6 Nutrition Services

  • Misión

The Greeley-Evans District 6 Farm to School program focuses on increasing local produce, proteins, and dairy in school meals and providing education in the classroom and garden to improve nutrition and support the local economy and environment.

    Acerca de

Greeley-Evans District 6 Nutrition Services provides breakfast and lunch meals to 22,000 students at 35 school sites across Greeley and Evans. Today, almost 100% of our meals are prepared from scratch in our Central Production Kitchen (CPK), and around 25% of our food purchases are local, through our Farm to School program. We began Farm to School purchasing in 2007 with the purchase of a single crop of cherry tomatoes for $239, and since then, with the ass istance of numerous grants including the USDA's Farm to School Grant, the program has expanded to other fruits, vegetables, dairy, and even meat items.

Farm to School also encompasses a number of other initiatives, including school gardens. School gardens provide a unique, hands-on learning environment for students, teachers and community members. It not only serves as an educational tool in curricula ranging from nutrition to science, but also breeds social team-building skills and gives students a sense of ownership and empowerment. D6 Farm to School supports a number of gardens in schools across the district, including Centennial Elementary School, Prairie Heights Middle School, Greeley West High School, and Northridge High School.
