Mission Statement
The mission of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) is to work in partnership with communities to protect and promote the health and well-being of all Boston residents, especially those impacted by racism and systemic inequities. The BPHC sets an expectation that all staff and leadership commit, individually and as part of the BPHC team, to hold ourselves accountable to establishing a culture of anti-racism and advance racial equity and justice through each of our bureaus, programs, and offices.
Job Description
- Provide legal and administrative support to the General Counsel, including, but not limited to, conducting legal research, drafting internal legal memoranda and general correspondence, answering telephone extension, responding to voicemails, maintaining schedule, sorting and scanning mail, and organizing files.
- Provide legal support to staff attorneys, including, but not limited to, filing court documents, organizing exhibits, drafting motions and discovery requests and responses, and assisting in preparation for depositions, hearings, and trials.
- Investigate and/or review and process all automobile accident claims filed against the BPHC.
- Maintain an active list of accident claims for auditing purposes
- Update and ensure the accuracy of electronic files, drives and databases.
- Coordinate and monitor assigned projects, including, but not limited to, program responses to subpoenas and medical record and FOIA requests.
- Receive inter and intra-agency surveillance requests. Review surveillance footage, determine relevant portions based on request, and save footage in appropriate format, and provide in shareable format.
- Provide support for investigations conducted by the General Counsel's office, schedule, and coordinate interview dates, take notes during interviews, and/or help draft and review final report for edits and comments; and
- Perform such other duties as the General Counsel may assign.
- Work to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
Minimum Qualifications
- A college degree or Paralegal Certificate.
- At least two years' work experience (office or legal office setting preferred) or at least one year of law school completed.
- General knowledge of civil litigation and discovery procedures.
- Microsoft Word, Westlaw, Adobe, and Internet experience.
- Excellent organization, research, writing and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, and attention to detail
- Promote health equity, inclusion and diversity within the BPHC, department and community.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
- Motivation to learn and perform new duties as necessary.
- Formal or informal social justice advocacy experience and/or community organizing/mobilization experience is preferred.
- A Criminal Offenders Records Information (CORI) request must be completed for this position. However, a record is not an automatic bar to employment but is reviewed in relation to the job applied for.
- Boston residency required, or willingness to relocate.

Pay Range
$60,000 - $70,000
