    POSITION OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Director of Communications and Strategic Partnership (DCSP), the Director of Development (DOD) leads the team, which includes an Individual Giving Manager (IGM) and Senior Development Associate (SDA). This position is strategic and tactical, as it is responsible for updating, managing, and executing the Mamatoto annual development plan. The ideal candidate has a clear grasp of all core components of development, with substantial experience in individual giving, including major gifts, stewardship, and annual giving campaigns (direct mail and digital). The DOD works closely with other members of the leadership team to engage individual donors in supporting our growth. The DOD plans and implements all individual donor cultivation and stewardship activities, conducts donor research, and manages reporting for individual giving. This position is responsible for a portfolio of major donors, ensuring their move management plans lead to solicitation and growth year over year.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Strategy and Leadership

    • Contribute positively to organizational culture and reflect Mamatoto’s values.
    • Manage and execute Mamatoto’s development plan to achieve annual revenue goals.
    • Update the existing development and stewardship plans with new ideas, industry best practices, and data-driven analysis.
    • Use data and metrics to help achieve fundraising goals, including identifying and developing a pipeline of major gift prospects.
    • Monitor and report regularly on the development plan's progress, providing actionable analysis for the Executive Director and DCSP.
    • Project managing the Executive Director’s (ED) and DCSP fundraising work, directing where and how best to spend her time and efforts weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
    • Foster a culture of philanthropy across the organization.
    • Lead the development team meetings by collaborating with team members to design agendas and managing the flow of the meeting.

    Individual Giving Relationship Management

    • Research and design the move management plans for all mid-level and major donors. Lead a portfolio of donors and support the Executive Director in executing those plans.
    • Energetically and proactively cultivate and nurture relationships between Mamatoto’s donors and donor prospects, volunteers, and other key constituents, serving as the main point of contact for all major donors.
    • Conduct prospect research on individual donors to grow the organization’s donor communities.
    • Prepare meeting briefs for Mamatoto’s leadership team when meeting with donors and attending events, including agendas and other needed communication collateral.
    • Work with the Individual Giving Manager and Senior Development Associate to manage incoming donor inquiries.
    • In partnership with the IGM, manage the execution of Mamatoto’s donor stewardship plan and update it annually.
    • Lead the planning and execution of donor cultivation events held at the Mamatoto Village office and/or in partnership with community hosts.

    Other Revenue Opportunities

    • Prospect, cultivate, and solicit relationships with local and national businesses with aligned values to increase corporate cash, in-kind contributions, sponsorship, and cause marketing opportunities.
    • Lead the revenue-generating elements (tickets, sponsorships, on-site ask, etc) of standing annual events, ensuring that these elements are coordinated with overall event planning and communications managed by the Communications-Development team.
    • Assist the Executive Director and the contracted grant writer in prospecting and cultivating foundation funding relationships as requested.

    Annual Appeals and Communications

    • Become a Mamatoto “expert” and excel at telling our story. Act as a spokesperson for the organization as needed to attract funding and engage with donors and prospective supporters.
    • Lead the design, creation (including copywriting), and project management of annual fundraising appeals, including analyzing campaign results and creating reports for future appeals.
    • Work with the DCSP to develop creative and mission-focused fundraising messaging that effectively articulates the special role of Mamatoto in the community
    • Use donor communications best practices to originate content, review design, and work with the DCSP to implement all donor communications and marketing, including monthly emails/newsletters, website donation pages, and program-focused one-pagers

    Development Operations and Revenue Tracking

    • Monitor annual and long-term revenue goals and budgets
    • Work with the IGM and SDA to regularly update dashboard reports
    • Manage development-focused data input and ensure accuracy in all records and development reports in the organization’s CRM.
    • Work closely with the SDA to ensure data integrity.

    SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS TO FOSTER SUCCESS

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or a related field
    • At least 8-10 years of nonprofit fundraising experience
    • 4+ years as a people manager and in a leadership and decision-making role
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop trusting relationships with diverse constituencies and communities
    • Experience writing and working from a development plan
    • Strong familiarity with human rights, reproductive justice, and/or maternal and infant health content
    • Demonstrated experience working on individual giving, including major gifts, email campaigns, annual fund, and/or related tasks
    • Superb verbal and written communication skills, with experience tailoring messages to suit intended audiences and compelling readers to act
    • Excellent project management skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and plan work activities across multiple projects, use time efficiently, follow instructions, and respond to management direction
    • Enthusiasm to propose fresh ideas without prompting from leadership, openness to feedback on those ideas, and persistence to bring those ideas to life
    • Ability to analyze and use data and metrics to shape goals, strategies, and tactics.
    • High level of skill with Google Drive, iOS, Canva, and MS Office applications
    • Expert knowledge of CRM best practices; Salesforce experience preferred
    • Must be able to work with sensitive and protected information in a confidential manner
    • Absolute professionalism when dealing with others to represent our company in a positive light
    • Ability to receive constructive feedback
    • Past success working with communities, with the ability to cultivate existing relationships and establish new ones.
