    ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Founded in 2007 by former Ramona Gardens neighborhood resident Maria "Lou" Calanche, Legacy LA's mission is to make positive interventions in the lives of young people by offering alternatives to gangs and violence. Legacy LA builds the capacity of youth to reach their full potential and equips them with tools to transform their lives and community. We do this by addressing the impact of multi-generational gang violence and low educational attainment in Ramona Gardens in Boyle Heights. Our strategies include Dream Big Youth Leadership, Student Success Academic Support Program, and Parent Programming and Supports.

The Coordinator ensures that all outdoor experiences are well-organized, safe, and educational, while also collecting feedback from participants to inform future programming. The Nature Field Trip Coordinator also assists the Outdoor Equity Coordinator in implementing Legacy LA’s broader environmental justice goals—piloting the Outdoor Equity Youth Leadership Internship for 15-20 youth ages 17-26 alongside the Outdoor Equity Coordinator.

    • Support project evaluation by collecting and organizing youth feedback to improve future trips and hikes.
    • Maintain detailed records of trip logistics, participation, and outcomes to support grant reporting.
    • Support the organization with community events, also known as all hands on deck, that can be inclusive of tasks outside main duties including work schedule changes, lifting and carrying items 50lbs, and exposure to heat or cold environments when on field trips.

Secondary Responsibilities – Assisting the Outdoor Equity Coordinator

    • Support youth recruitment for the Outdoor Equity program and environmental justice campaigns.
    • Assist in the development of internship curriculum and lesson plans related to nature, leadership, and environmental stewardship
    • Help facilitate youth-led nature activities and reflective learning experiences during trips and hikes.
    • Support Youth Interns’ participation in Legacy LA’s Ramona Gardens Natural Park campaign, including outreach and campaign activities.
    • Conduct youth outreach related to Legacy LA’s environmental justice and outdoor equity initiatives.
    • Participate in staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development training as required.

    DESIRED SKILL SET:

    • Valid California Driver’s License required.
    • Ability and willingness to drive and support the LLA van
    • Strong desire and ability to work with youth (ages 10–26) and families from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds.

    • Enthusiastic, team-oriented, and adaptable to changing program needs.
    • Proficiency in data collection and reporting to support grant compliance.
