    Overview

    The Executive Director provides strategic leadership and direction for the United Way of Harrison and Doddridge Counties, ensuring the organization advances its mission and delivers measurable community impact. This role mobilizes partners across the nonprofit, public, and private sectors to improve health, education, and economic stability throughout the county.

    The Executive Director oversees organizational strategy, operations, financial management, fundraising, and community engagement. As the chief ambassador of the United Way brand, this leader builds trust, strengthens relationships, and ensures the organization remains relevant and effective.

    Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    Leadership and Community Impact

      • Advance the mission, vision, and values of United Way of Harrison and Doddridge Counties.
      • Provide strategic leadership that drives measurable community outcomes.
      • Lead periodic community assessments to identify priority needs.
      • Mobilize financial, volunteer, and organizational resources to address community issues.
      • Represent United Way on boards, coalitions, and community groups.
      • Analyze community health and human service trends and propose solutions.
      • Collaborate with agencies and government partners to strengthen service delivery systems.
      • Advocate, within the United Way guidelines, for policies that support community well‑being at local, state, and national levels.
      • Lead year‑round public education and engagement efforts to increase awareness of community needs.
      • Model integrity, inclusiveness, adaptability, and continuous learning.
      • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all organizational and community work.

    Operational and Program Management

      • Oversee daily operations to ensure efficiency, compliance, and alignment with strategic goals.
      • Lead planning, execution, and evaluation of special projects and events.
      • Prepare agendas, reports, and materials for Board meetings.
      • Implement Board‑approved policies and ensure compliance with United Way Worldwide Standards and requirements.
      • Maintain building and tenant relationships, ensuring leases and payments are current.
      • Ensure direct service programs remain responsive to evolving community needs.
      • Oversee technology systems, data security, and donor database management.
      • Manage organizational risk and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

    Employee and Board Relations

      • Lead and support a staff of 9 employees, fostering a culture of teamwork, innovation, and service.
      • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain high‑performing staff.
      • Provide supervision, coaching, and performance evaluations for direct reports.
      • Ensure staff receive appropriate orientation, training, and professional development.
      • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive workplace culture.
      • Develop and implement training and onboarding for new Board members.
      • Support Board governance, bylaws compliance, and committee work.
      • Collaborate with the Board on strategic planning and organizational direction.
      • Develop succession planning for key staff roles.
      • Establish and monitor organizational performance metrics for staff and programs

    Financial Management

      • Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, accounts payable and receivable, and pledge processing.
      • Ensure adherence to fiscal policies and monitor budget performance.
      • Prepare financial and fundraising reports for the Board and committees.
      • Manage the annual audit process and ensure compliance with federal and state tax requirements.
      • Oversee payroll and tax reporting procedures.
      • Ensure strong financial controls and fraud‑prevention practices.
      • Collaborate with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee on financial strategy and investments.
      • Support long‑term financial sustainability planning.

    Fundraising and Annual Campaign Leadership

      • Plan, develop, and execute the annual United Way campaign in partnership with volunteers.
      • Manage campaign operations, budgets, reporting, and stewardship activities.
      • Develop training, tools, and support systems for campaign volunteers.
      • Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, businesses, and community partners.
      • Represent United Way at workplace campaigns, community events, and public speaking engagements.
      • Analyze giving trends and develop strategies to strengthen donor engagement.
      • Lead marketing and communications efforts to promote United Way’s mission and impact.
      • Support year‑round fundraising, including major gifts, corporate partnerships, and digital giving.
      • Prepare grant proposals for operating funds, endowment funds, and community impact.

    Partner Agency and Community Relations

      • Manage the Partner Agency funding application, evaluation, and allocation process.
      • Ensure timely distribution of funds and clear communication with partner agencies on United Way policies.
      • Provide professional development opportunities and technical assistance to agencies.
      • Advise agencies on United Way policies and funding decisions.
      • Provide leadership and support to 17 partner agencies, ensuring strong collaboration, accountability, and alignment with community impact goals.
      • Strengthen relationships with volunteers, board members, and community stakeholders.
      • Oversee all public communications, including print materials, media relations, website, and social media.
      • Serve as a consultant and resource to Partner Agencies and community groups.
      • Maintain strong partnerships with health and human service organizations and government entities.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

      • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
      • Demonstrated fundraising experience.
      • Three to five years of nonprofit leadership experience.
      • Management experience including supervision, budgeting, and organizational planning.
      • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

      • Experience with community impact or collective impact models.
      • Experience cultivating and managing relationships across sectors.
      • Strong collaboration and facilitation skills.
      • Results‑driven leadership with a focus on measurable outcomes.
      • Experience with donor databases and nonprofit technology tools.

    Work Schedule / Expectations

      • Maintain Office Hours Monday – Friday 8am-4:30pm
      • Travel within the counties and state
      • Evening/weekend events
