    Teaching Faculty – Reading

    Job Title: Teaching Faculty – Reading

    Location: In Person/Norfolk, VA

    Terms: Part Time (up to 10 hours per week)

    Salary/Rate: $25/hr

    Start Date: Immediately

    Requirements:

    Must be able to work either afternoons between the hours of 3:00 PM–6:30 PM (ET), Monday–Thursday during the school year and/or 10:00 AM–3:30 PM during the summer.

    Joy Education Foundation is a technology nonprofit that provides virtual reading support to K–12 students and offers on-demand training for teachers, parents, and community volunteers to address literacy needs in their communities.

    About the Role

    Joy Education Foundation is seeking passionate, equity-minded educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors. Teaching Faculty will be on the front lines of closing the literacy gap, working directly with 2nd–8th grade students in live, synchronous, online tutoring sessions. These lessons are conducted virtually via video conferencing, and Teaching Faculty will be on camera with students.

    We value diversity of all kinds and aim to build a team that reflects the students we serve.

    As a Teaching Faculty – Reading, you will teach small groups of 1–4 students using Joy Education’s learning platform and curriculum, which provides real-time performance data. You will meet consistently with the same students each week to build strong, supportive relationships.

    This is a fully remote position. High-performing Teaching Faculty may be invited to apply for Lead roles with additional responsibilities and increased compensation.

    What You Will Do

    • Manage a caseload of 5-10 students under the supervision of a Program Manager
    • Build strong, culturally responsive relationships with students and families
    • Provide targeted reading instruction and intervention using Joy Education curriculum and tools
    • Utilize structured literacy strategies, including UFLI-informed practices, to support student growth
    • Collect, analyze, and share student data to inform instruction
    • Participate in individual and group coaching sessions with instructional staff

    Who We’re Looking For

    • Passion for working with 1st–8th grade students
    • Strong comfort with technology and virtual instruction
    • Bachelor’s Degree required
    • Teaching Credential required
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience utilizing the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Foundations framework
    • Ability to design and deliver a sample lesson using UFLI-aligned instructional practices (required as part of the application process)
    • Must be a current U.S. resident (we are unable to hire internationally at this time)

    Job Details

    • Location: In Person/ Norfolk, VA
    • Pay Rate: $27/hour
    • Teaching Faculty are independent contractors and responsible for their own tax filings (1099 provided annually)
    • Curriculum: A proven technology platform that guides instruction and tracks student performance in real time

    How We Work

    • We use an Orton-Gillingham-based, structured literacy approach to build word recognition, fluency, and comprehension
    • Teaching Faculty complete an IDA-accredited structured literacy training program
    • Instruction is guided by data from DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency and STAR Phonics/Reading assessments
    • Students attend 3 weekly sessions (20–30 minutes each) via Google Meet
    • We use a Virtual Professional Learning Community model for ongoing development
    • Students are paired consistently with Teaching Faculty for 12-week cycles (Monday–Thursday)
    • We prioritize culturally responsive, identity-centered instruction
    • We track and share student growth data with families and partners
    • Families receive access to our digital curriculum for additional practice
