The foundation has updated its strategy and organizational structure to support advancing collective action through field building, movement infrastructure, and collaborations–all indispensable ingredients of the influence and alignment needed for significant social change.     Position Overview

    The Fellow supports the Foundation’s impact-oriented program by taking on a variety of projects that span the range of workstreams, including grantmaking, learning and evaluation, and operational initiatives. The Pisces Foundation implements grantmaking and other supportive program activities through an integrated program team that is capable of collaboration across its two focus areas of environmental and San Francisco grantmaking. In the context of a multi-focal strategy, the Fellow position will gain a broad range of experience in philanthropy while making a significant contribution to the Foundation’s local and environmental impact.

    Projects may include supporting the development and launch of philanthropic initiatives, preparing recommendations and approvals for leadership team and board meetings, supporting database architecture for grantmaking expansion, and more. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in philanthropy, communications, and nonprofit strategy, while working closely with senior staff and leaders in the field.

    The position will work in our San Francisco office. This is a limited-term two-year position. The Fellow is supervised by the Program Director and works across the Foundation in a matrix-management structure, meaning that the Fellow works with and reports to other staff members to execute various projects.

    Essential Duties

    Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

    Program Implementation

    • In partnership with and in support of program colleagues, work to achieve the goals established in the program’s strategic plan through tasks including:
      • Supporting the program staff on the development and launch new San Francisco and Environment + Climate initiatives and ongoing management of Signature Initiatives
      • Executing tasks to support the development of new partnerships, including outreach, scheduling, and notetaking
      • Work with program staff to support field building activities such as organizing convenings
    • Collaborate with program colleagues on assessing grantee and program progress toward goals

    Grants Management Support

    • Collaborate with and support the Director of Operations, the Grants Management team, and fellow program staff on Foundation-wide grants management

    Communications

    • Website updates to support the Foundation, including:
        • Project management for website updates and design refreshes
        • Supporting recruiting and onboarding by posting job openings, bios, and headshots
      • Document support including proofreading, editing, and formatting
      • Post, test, and format blogs and social media posts
      • Collaborate with grants team to organize and maintain contacts and Mailchimp lists; ensure that up-to-date contacts from Salesforce are included in our mailing lists

    Internal Relationships and Learning

      • Support the integration of a shared Foundation strategy, ethos, and approach across both domain areas of environmental and San Francisco grantmaking
      • Support the President and program team on projects, demonstrating the accountability and clarity of communication necessary for success within a matrix-management structure

    Skills and Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal skills and qualities:

      • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years’ professional experience
      • Self-starter; highly motivated and resourceful team-player. Comfortable with ambiguity and the ability to work through solutions when there is no obvious path.
      • Thrives on variety and wearing multiple hats and is comfortable in a dynamic environment in which new programs and areas of focus are being launched with existing teammates and new teammates.
      • Demonstrated project management experience, including the ability to think and work independently and effectively and to plan, prioritize, follow through, and track multiple work streams under deadlines in a dynamic environment.
      • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
    • Strong team orientation and the demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within and across teams to reach common goals.
    • Strong interest in all areas of the Foundation’s program, including water, climate, and San Francisco and urban issues generally. Keen interest in collective impact and collaboration for impact.
    • Ability to represent the Foundation and build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, partners, and grantees with a respectful and authentic manner. Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Flexibility, emotional intelligence, and a willingness to help others.
      • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a range of audiences in meetings, over email, and through formal work product and presentations. Experience adapting communication style to different cultural environments.
    • Demonstrable commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills with attention to detail and commitment to high quality work.
    • Commitment to the Pisces Foundation’s mission and strategy.

    Location and Schedule

    To promote collaboration and a dynamic work experience, the Pisces Foundation operates with a hybrid schedule, working out of the Foundation offices in downtown San Francisco, currently three days a week. Candidates must live in the San Francisco Bay Area or be willing to relocate and must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Pisces Foundation offers an excellent compensation package including platinum-level health, dental, and vision insurance; a Flexible Spending Account; life insurance; bereavement leave; paid time off; and holidays.

    The starting salary for this role is $77,000 – $95,000 depending on skills and experience. Our salaries are competitive, reflect our geographic location and field, and are commensurate with experience. Pisces Foundation participates in multiple compensation surveys for grantmaking organizations and conducts an annual review of market-based salary trends.
