    The Team

The GitLab Foundation is a highly collaborative, fully remote team driven by curiosity, results-orientation, and a commitment to continuous learning. Our team brings together diverse experiences across philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, the private sector, and research institutions—each perspective helping us approach our work with depth, empathy, and strategic insight. Our culture is grounded in our CREDIT values and shaped by respect, humility, open debate, and a strong bias for action. We trust one another to lead with integrity, operate with transparency, and lean into challenges with a shared sense of purpose. Above all, we are united by a deep commitment to achieving meaningful, measurable change in the lives of those we serve.

    About this Role

The GitLab Foundation seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial Director, Impact Advisory Services to lead and deliver a growing consulting and impact modeling practice that supports philanthropic and investor clients in achieving measurable social and economic outcomes.

Working in close collaboration with the Impact Modeling & Measurement (IMM) team, the Director will serve as the Foundation’s lead and sole consultant, directly engaging with clients to design and deliver high-quality advisory services. This includes building ROI and SROI models, co-developing frameworks, advancing data analytics capabilities (including AI-enabled tools), and translating IMM’s modeling expertise into client-facing strategy and decision-making.

Reporting to and working closely with the Chief Impact Officer (CIO), the Director will shape and execute the Foundation’s advisory strategy, managing all aspects of client delivery, service design, and business development. Together, they will build a high-impact advisory practice that extends the Foundation’s influence and thought leadership across the philanthropic sector. While the CIO provides strategic direction and supports business development, the Director will own execution and delivery—from scoping and client engagement through final presentation and relationship management.

The ideal candidate brings deep consulting experience, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution. They thrive in ambiguity, are energized by building something new, and embody the Foundation’s CREDIT values in their leadership and client engagement approach.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Oversight

    • Partner with the CIO to shape and lead the Impact Advisory Services initiative as a core strategic pillar of the Foundation.
    • Lead the day-to-day operations of the advisory function, managing budgeting, forecasting, and resource planning to ensure high-quality and financially sustainable execution.
    • Execute and refine the growth strategy led by the CIO to expand the Foundation’s advisory reach while maintaining strong alignment with mission and values.
    • Develop and continuously improve internal IP, toolkits, and advisory playbooks that advance the field of ROI-based and outcomes-driven philanthropy.
    • Collaborate closely with the Impact Modeling & Measurement (IMM) team to ensure methodological rigor, data accuracy, and integration of cutting-edge modeling approaches—including AI-enabled tools—into advisory engagements.

    Client Engagement & Delivery

    • Serve as the Foundation’s lead and sole consultant, managing all aspects of client delivery from scoping to final presentation.
    • Design and deliver customized advisory engagements that integrate ROI/SROI modeling, impact analysis, and strategic decision support.
    • Lead multi-phase consulting projects that include stakeholder facilitation, leadership alignment, and actionable strategy development.
    • Facilitate executive workshops, stakeholder sessions, and strategic discussions that translate complex data into practical, evidence-based decisions.
    • Partner with the CIO as a co-facilitator or strategic thought partner on high-impact engagements when needed.
    • Ensure deliverables meet or exceed expectations for analytical rigor, insight, and timeliness.
    • Continuously monitor client satisfaction and incorporate feedback to improve service quality, efficiency, and learning.

    External Representation & Business Development

    • Identify, cultivate, and secure mission-aligned client opportunities and partnerships to expand Impact Advisory Services' reach and influence.
    • Scope, price, and propose advisory engagements that balance financial sustainability with mission-driven impact.
    • Build trusted, long-term relationships that lead to repeat engagements and multi-phase partnerships.
    • Represent the GitLab Foundation’s ROI approach and evidence-based advisory work at conferences, in sector networks, and through public forums.
    • Contribute thought leadership through case studies, presentations, and publications that elevate the Foundation’s visibility in outcomes-driven philanthropy and impact modeling.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Personal Attributes

    • 10+ years of experience in consulting, philanthropic advisory, impact measurement, or adjacent analytical and strategy service delivery roles.
    • Demonstrated success leading a service business, practice line, or consulting function, with responsibility for delivery quality, client satisfaction, and financial sustainability.
    • Deep expertise in impact modeling and measurement, including ROI/SROI model development, cost-effectiveness analysis, and quantitative or economic modeling.
    • Proven ability to independently produce analytical deliverables (e.g., ROI models, sensitivity analyses, dashboards, and client-ready reports) with minimal support.
    • Strong consulting, facilitation, and client relationship management skills, with experience designing and delivering services for funders, foundations, or social enterprises.
    • Experience with data innovation, including the use of AI, LLMs, automation, or advanced analytics to enhance modeling, evaluation, and decision-making processes.
    • Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in one or more areas such as health care, workforce development, change management, impact validation audits, or tech platform development (highly desirable).
    • Excellent communicator with the ability to translate complex analytical insights into clear, compelling narratives for executive and external audiences.
    • Comfortable operating in agile, entrepreneurial environments with a strong bias for action and continuous improvement.
    • Advanced proficiency in spreadsheet modeling (Google Sheets/Excel) and data visualization (Tableau or PowerBI); experience with Python or R is a plus.
    • High emotional intelligence, humility, and commitment to continuous improvement, modeling the Foundation’s CREDIT values in all interactions
