    Position Overview

    The Accounting Manager is responsible for maintaining IFIP’s day-to-day accounting activities while collaborating closely with IFIP’s outsourced accounting firm, IFIP’s contract Chief Financial Officer, and IFIP’s Executive Director and staff. This includes responsibility for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management. The Accounting Manager will ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the organization’s accounting activities, serving as the primary point of contact for an international team.

    This position reports to the Operations and Finance Director and will provide support to the CFO for organizational budgeting, compliance, internal controls and projects as needed.

    The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or business administration, or a related field and have at least five years of experience in non-profit accounting. The candidate should have exceptional communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment. The Accounting Manager is part of a global team that works with a range of stakeholders. Understanding of, and respect for, Indigenous Peoples values and rights is essential for the position. IFIP’s global community of staff, board, members and partners based across the globe. Familiarity with working in a global team is preferred.

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as staff point person for day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
    • Prepare accounts payable, credit cards payable and accounts receivable for posting to accounting system by outsourced accounting firm.
    • Prepare payment to vendors, grantees, and consultants via wire transfer.
    • Oversee the recording of organizational monthly credit card expenses, ensuring expenses are documented and coded in alignment with approved organizational budget.
    • Prepare semi-monthly payroll for US and international staff for submission to third-party payroll processor and employers of record.
    • Prepare and manage contracts for IFIP consultants.
    • Monitor daily cash balances to ensure necessary funds to pay vendors and staff.
    • Oversee preparation of quarterly personnel time allocation by staff.
    • Conduct accounting orientations with new staff and provide ongoing refreshers for staff.
    • Collaborate closely with outsourced accounting firm to maintain accurate and timely financial records and financial reporting.
    • Collaborate with CFO to:
      • Draft and update policies, procedures, and internal controls.
      • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations.
      • Prepare for annual independent audit and filing of organizational tax returns.
      • Support annual budgeting process.
      • Analyze financial data to inform organizational planning and performance.
    • Collaborate with Operations Team to assess the efficiency of internal financial and accounting policies and procedures to recommend improvements to systems and processes
    • Support implementation of cross-departmental projects related to finance and operations
    • Travels domestically and internationally to urban and rural areas where English may not be the main language.
    • Other duties or special projects may be assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field from a four-year college or university.
    • Minimum of five years of experience in non-profit accounting.
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, payroll processing, and accounting regulations.
    • Strong technical proficiency with accounting systems and software and with payroll processors and employers of record. Experience with Xero and Bill.com preferred.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate financial information to non-financial staff members and stakeholders.
    • Detail-oriented with an eye for accuracy and strong organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively.
    • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, stay current with financial best practices, and bring a continuous learning mindset.
    • Ability to maintain a high level of discretion, integrity, and confidentiality.
    • Strong proficiency with remote meeting software, Microsoft Office Suite of products, and cloud systems for file storage and project management.
    • Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples' organizational landscape, philanthropy, and non-profit organizations preferred.
    • Experience working remotely as part of a global team and working across time zones. Ability to join occasional meetings with international team members/stakeholders outside of normal business hours.
    • Limited travel required, including possible international travel. Must be able to travel with luggage and be able to transport materials and personal overnight supplies.

    • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures and take responsibility for own administrative tasks such as submission of receipts, reimbursement requests, scheduling, travel planning, etc.
    • Embody and uphold the 5 R’s (Respect, Relationships, Responsibility, Reciprocity, Redistribution) in working with external stakeholders and internal team members

    Application information:

    Location: This is a hybrid position with a preference for candidates located in the Sacramento Region or San Francisco Bay Area in California. Candidates located outside of the Sacramento area must be able to work in person at the IFIP office for up to four weeks per year. Up to 10 days of domestic/international travel is required for staff retreats and event support as needed. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.

    Compensation: $90,000 - $110,000 depending on experience. IFIP offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including employer paid health, dental, and vision benefits, 10 days of paid vacation in the first year, and 11 paid holidays per year.
