    About the American Birding Association

    The American Birding Association (ABA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides leadership to birders by increasing their knowledge, skills, and enjoyment of birding. Our mission is to make birding better by providing knowledge, sharing experiences, and building community. The ABA represents the birding community and supports birders through publications, conferences, workshops, tours, partnerships, and networks. The ABA’s education programs promote birding skills, ornithological knowledge, and the development of a conservation ethic. The ABA encourages birders to apply their skills to help conserve birds and their habitats, and we represent the interests of birders in planning and legislative arenas.

    Position Summary

    The Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for building the public profile of the ABA and promoting its goals and programs. Key duties include developing and executing communication strategies, creating content like press releases and social media posts, managing media relations, and analyzing the effectiveness of campaigns. This position also plans and executes ABA member and public outreach events. This role requires strong writing, editing, and interpersonal skills. This position reports to the Executive Director.

    Responsibilities:

    • Increase awareness of ABA’s mission and impact, helping us reach a wider audience through intensive research, targeted campaigns, and storytelling. Develop and implement comprehensive advertising and promotional plans to drive brand awareness, increase membership, increase merchandise sales and raise event attendance.
    • Plan, develop, and implement marketing strategies to increase membership, including outreach to new audiences.
    • Attend or participate in birding festivals, conferences, community events, and promotional events related to ABA & birding in general. Create and develop top tier events and promotional opportunities.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including membership & development, product, and creative teams, to develop marketing materials, promotions, and campaigns.
    • Track program budgets, expenses, and campaign response rates to evaluate each campaign, based on program objectives and industry norms. Adjust strategies to optimize every fundraising & promotional effort. Monitor and analyze results to determine cost effectiveness of promotion campaigns and make data-driven recommendations for improvement.
    • Devise or evaluate methods and procedures for collecting data from the public, such as surveys, opinion polls, and questionnaires.
    • Identify, manage and build relationships with contacts for promotional campaigns and industry programs. Maintain portfolios of marketing campaigns, strategies, and other marketing products or ideas. Develop and maintain a marketing calendar.
    • Prepare press releases and coordination of press activities.
    • Monitor market trends, conduct market research, and analyze consumer behavior to identify opportunities and adjust strategies accordingly. Researching trends and new marketing opportunities, and brainstorming ideas for growth.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field (or equivalent experience)
    • 3–5+ years communications/marketing experience in nonprofits or membership organizations
    • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
    • Experience with CRM and email marketing platforms (e.g. Neon)
    • Proficiency in social media management, analytics tools, and content creation software
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
    • Collaborative mindset and commitment to nonprofit mission-driven work
    • Must be able to travel to festivals and events on a regular basis
    • General understanding of birds and the birding community.

    Compensación

    This is a fully remote 40 hour per week position with a salary range of $50,000 - $60,000. Benefits include employer match for simple IRA contributions, health/vision/dental insurance, and basic life insurance.
