    Organizing Director

    Job Description

    VietLead is seeking an Organizing Director. The Organizing Director is responsible for building a strong and cohesive organizing team across VietLead’s basebuilding committees in Philadelphia and statewide coalition work. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to supervise, coach and train organizers, build a strong and connected team, make sharp political assessments and navigate coalition politics. This is a leadership position at VietLead that supports cultivating the health, wellbeing and staff culture of the organization.

    VietLead is a grassroots, base-building organization building the political power and culturally rooted leadership of Philadelphia’s Vietnamese and Southeast Asian (SEA) community—those who have long been excluded from political and social systems that oppress refugees, immigrants, and working-class communities of color. Our work is shaped by critical frameworks of racial justice, healing justice, sovereignty, and economic justice. VietLead is moving into building an organizational membership model for the first time with a focus on worker rights and labor organizing.

    This position reports to the Executive Director.

    Responsibilities

    The Organizing Director’s specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Political Strategy & Membership Building 30%
      • Create an expectation, framework and support for rigorous basebuilding
      • Build Membership infrastructure to ensure clear and efficient communication within and across teams
      • Lead the process of campaign identification and strategy development alongside the Lead Organizers, ED, and member leaders.
      • Represent VietLead and take leadership in city and/or statewide coalitions, and manage relationships with state elected and government officials, alongside the Executive Director and Lead Organizers
    • Organizational Leadership 30%
      • Alongside the Managing Director, bottomline VietLead’s internal staff processes, including quarterly planning, staff retreats, staff evaluations, etc.
      • Support the ED to assess and maintain the health, wellbeing and staff culture of the organization
      • Actively participate in and show leadership in all staff strategy planning, political development, and evaluation activities
      • Operational due diligence related to organizing and membership activities including Grants management for program
    • Staff Development 20%
      • Conduct staff Trainings on basebuilding and organizing
      • Support Lead Organizers to develop effective infrastructure within committees that consistently grows the membership of VietLead and moves members into more leadership
    • Supervision 20%
      • Supervise three to four staff: two to three Lead Organizers and a Communications and Media Manager
      • Support the Lead Organizers to develop and lead trainings that develop organizers’ political analysis and skills
    • Represent VietLead’s strategy and values in all internal and external activities

    This position will supervise the Lead (or Senior Lead) Organizers, Communications and Media Manager and report to the Executive Director.

    Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have experience:

    • Building a team across discrete and distinct areas of work
    • Managing organization-wide processes and team building
    • Supervising organizers focused on basebuilding and leadership development
    • Training organizers focused on basebuilding and leadership development
    • Navigating coalition politics with principle and strategy
    • Managing relationships with elected officials
    • Developing and implementing campaign strategy, especially led by working class members
    • Engaging in other Left, base building, organizing and/or movement organizations
    • Strong commitment to VietLead’s strategy and values
    • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects at the same time
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
    • Strong peer­‐counseling, conflict­‐management and crisis management skills preferred
    • Knowledge in public policy, workers rights, labor and/or electoral organizing is preferred
    • Bi-lingual in English and Vietnamese is preferred

    Physical Demands:

    Able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds, etc. Must be able to stretch, bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach above or below the shoulder, push, grasp, and lift up to 20 pounds. able to walk, drive, write, stand, and sit.

    This is a full-time, exempt position (32 hours/week) with benefits. The salary for this position is $72,384 - $83,616, depending on experience. We currently have a hybrid return to office policy, working in the office and from home. This position is based in Philadelphia.
