Established in 1970, JCYC was founded by students who stood in solidarity with other communities to fight for the creation of ethnic studies. Today, JCYC annually serves over 7,000 young people from all backgrounds and provides a continuum of care from preschool through college. ABOUT UPWARD BOUND
JCYC Upward Bound is a year-round, pre-college TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program serves San Francisco public high school students who are from low-income families and/or will be the first generation in their families to attend college. Program participants receive one-on-one advising, academic instruction, and a variety of experiences to enhance their college readiness and life skills. POSITION SUMMARY
Each summer, JCYC Upward Bound runs a six-week summer enrichment program designed to provide students exposure to the college environment and instruction in rigorous high school academic coursework. The Summer Instructor will build and teach one to three high school-level courses Monday through Thursday in Lab Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Mathematics (Algebra through Calculus), or Foreign Language (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, American Sign Language, etc.). Classes will be on a block schedule, and instructors will be compensated for both instruction and preparation time.
The ideal candidate should be skilled in working collaboratively, fostering a nurturing environment for youth, and working with both large and small class sizes. They should demonstrate competency in the subjects they will teach and be motivated to inspire students to explore and make connections to class content. They should be detail-oriented and able to navigate a fast-paced and changing environment.
