    Education Week, a nonprofit media organization that provides the most trusted news on K-12 American education, is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our Accounting Team.

    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Controller and working closely with other members of the Accounting Team as well as employees across the organization, the Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring revenue is properly accounted for in accordance with GAAP across multiple products and business lines as well grant contributions. The Senior Accountant will prepare monthly sales and revenue reports for each line of business as well as calculate quarterly commissions earned by the sales teams. Working closely with the AR/AP Specialist, the Senior Accountant will monitor open customer invoices and assist with collection efforts. The Senior Accountant will work with the Development team to track expenses and prepare financial reports to facilitate grant reporting. Accuracy and attention to detail is absolutely required, as well as a track record of reliability, confidentiality, and conscientious work habits.

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare journal entries to record monthly activity for EdWeek Subscriptions managed through a third-party subscription management system
    • Reconcile subscription payments received through the lockbox and Stripe to the bank and subscription management system
    • Assist the AR/AP Specialist with applying customer payments to invoices issued through Salesforce and the subscription management system
    • Maintain reconciliations of unapplied cash and assist with resolution of those payments to customer invoices
    • Maintain AR Aging analyses and meet regularly with individuals across the business to monitor collection activity
    • Reconcile deferred revenue for advertising, subscriptions, and research projects
    • Track accounts receivable and deferred revenue for EdWeek events and ensure revenue is properly recognized. Reconcile activity in the general ledger to that reported within the third-party event management platform, Cvent
    • Accrue bonuses, commissions, accrued salaries, and pension liability, monthly, and reconcile to the trial balance
    • Prepare quarterly commission statements for review by sales reps and processing by HR though payroll
    • Manage grant reporting, ensuring expenses are properly recorded to each grant, earnings are released and recognized appropriately, and financial reports are prepared to ensure compliance with funders' requirements
    • Record activity associated with EdWeek's property and reported monthly by our property management company
    • Assist with other monthly account reconciliations, as needed, and prepare schedules for the auditors

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 4+ years’ experience
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting, including revenue recognition (Topic 606)
    • Ability to work independently with limited supervision, good time management, organizational and prioritization skills
    • Extremely ethical, conscientious, and displaying a high level of integrity
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally with colleagues across the organization
    • Detail-oriented, deadline-focused, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
    • Experience with accounting and related systems (Salesforce, Certinia, and Cvent, a plus)
    • Advanced experience with Excel (Pivot tables and VLOOKUP)
    • Good team player, willing to assist others and share expertise
