PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide individual and group counseling to male students and their families in a nurturing and caring
atmosphere and work collaboratively within the Counseling Department with other counseling staff in
organizing programming and administrative responsibilities; as a core primary purpose, all job positions
are to maintain the mission and vision of The Neighborhood Academy.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
- Develop and coordinate the Counseling curriculum in collaboration with the Counseling Department.
- Facilitate Group Counseling sessions in accordance with the Counseling curriculum for male
students.
- Coordinate diagnostic testing.
- Provide individual and group counseling for students and when necessary, their families.
- Provide crisis counseling.
- Aid School Leadership as needed.
- Act as liaison between students and families and community agencies.
- Implement individual counseling for students when needed.
- Monitor classrooms for behavioral and student/faculty interactions.
- Participate in and assist with The Neighborhood Academy’s Summer Program.
- Record monthly therapeutic hours for yearly statistics.
- Keep a weekly journal of individual and group activities.
- Keep track of all Counseling activities, events, and statistics.
- Write end of year evaluative reports in collaboration with Counseling Department staff.
- Assume responsibility for either an athletic or arts connection activity for at least one season each
school year.
- Serve as a proctor/support staff for the extended school day as designated for the rotational weekly
schedule.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
❖ Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related field required; Master’s degree
preferred.
❖ Minimum of two years of experience in providing/supporting counseling services in an inner city
environment with a Trauma-Informed lens. Group and Family Counseling/Therapy experience
preferred.
❖ Proficiency in the use of technology, including Google Suites.
❖ Federal FBI & Pennsylvania Criminal Background & Child Abuse Clearances
KNOWLEDGES / SKILLS / ABILITIES
❖ Energy and love for working with students and families..
❖ Knowledge of inner city and traumas of poverty (especially its effect on the psycho/social
development of boys).
❖ Self-starting, highly motivated, and creative.
❖ Empathetic “people person” who understands the value of and ability to build relationships in a
therapeutic manner.
❖ Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
❖ Effective conflict management skills.
❖ Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
❖ Excellent skills in written, verbal and oral communications.
WORKING CONDITIONS
❖ General office environment.
❖ Lifting of up to 10 pounds.
❖ Driver’s license required for needed travel.
