POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Development will be the primary architect and driver of SoSS’s fundraising strategy. As a mission-critical leadership role, this person must be a highly motivated, independent, and strategic development professional who can lead fundraising efforts with minimal supervision, develop systems from the ground up, and deliver results.
Sisterhood is at a pivotal point in its growth. With key foundation funding cycles ending, the organization must significantly diversify its funding base. This position is ideal for a dynamic leader ready to take ownership of a development program and build something lasting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fundraising Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and lead the annual fundraising strategy for the organization in collaboration with the Executive Director (ED) and Board of Directors.
- Establish, monitor, and report on clear income goals for:
- Major gifts
- Annual membership
- Small individual gifts
- Foundation grants
- Institutional/partner support
- Provide regular reports of activities and progress toward goals to the ED and Board.
- Present at board meetings and help empower board members to participate meaningfully in fundraising efforts.
- Individual Giving
- Design and implement strategies to grow individual giving at all levels:
- Major donors – manage relationships and execute management strategies alongside the ED.
- Mid-level and small donors – cultivate through digital campaigns, annual appeals, and donor engagement efforts.
- Members – optimize member retention, renewals, recruitment, and upgrade pathways.
- Maintain segmented donor lists and personalized engagement plans.
- Manage donor stewardship, recognition, and retention efforts.
- Foundation & Grant Management
- Identify and research new foundation funding opportunities aligned with the Sisterhood’s mission and programming.
- Write and submit compelling grant proposals and reports for new and existing foundation funders.
- Build and manage relationships with foundation program officers alongside the ED.
- Collaborate with the ED to align budgets, track deliverables, and meet reporting requirements.
- Institutional/Partner Fundraising
- Develop and nurture relationships with aligned institutional partners and sponsors.
- Design customized funding opportunities tied to events, programs, or new initiatives.
- Produce professional print and digital materials (e.g., sponsorship decks, impact reports) to inform and inspire partners and funders.
- Events & Community-Based Fundraising
- Strategize and implement fundraising components for the Sisterhood’s existing programs and events, maximizing earned income and sponsorship potential.
- Explore creative approaches to grassroots fundraising, including peer-to-peer campaigns and community drives.
- Communications & Donor Engagement
- Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy that supports fundraising, strengthens the brand, and engages donors.
- Manage and collaborate with staff, Board, and members on donor-focused communications, including:
- Newsletters and appeals
- Campaign materials
- Annual reports and donor updates
- Ensure communications are donor-centric, mission-aligned, and impact-focused.
- Development Operations & Infrastructure
- Build and maintain effective systems for managing development activities, including:
- Moves management tracking
- CRM/donor database utilization
- Donor pipeline management
- Project management tools and calendars for activities, campaigns, and events.
- Ensure data integrity and analysis to evaluate fundraising effectiveness.
- Adjust strategy as needed based on performance metrics and donor feedback.
- Partner with the ED and Board Fundraising Committee to build the board’s fundraising skills and confidence.
- Membership
- Develop and maintain appropriate records, budget and reports pertinent to membership.
- Set annual membership goals.
- Staff advisor and resource professional to the Board Membership Committee
- Ensure members receive benefits relevant to their tier levels.
- Manage customer service for members.
- Create and execute membership marketing emails and communications
- Work with Programs to enhance membership objectives.
- Create annual marketing plan and implement strategies to:
- Acquire members
- Retain members and upgrade members
Organizational Culture & Collaboration
This role works in close partnership with the ED to align fundraising with organizational goals and program impact and helps contribute to a culture of philanthropy among staff, board, and volunteers. As a part of the senior leadership team, they will participate in organizational planning and strategic discussions with the Board and key stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Minimum 5–7 years of nonprofit fundraising experience, with a successful track record in major gifts, foundation fundraising, and annual giving.
- Demonstrated ability to independently design and implement comprehensive development strategies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proposal and grant writing.
- Strong relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in CRM systems such as Sales Force and fundraising platforms such as Give Lively.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Membership experience is a plus.
- Ability to work independently, remotely, and efficiently in a small team environment.
Preferred:
- Experience in a small or mid-sized nonprofit, ideally during a period of change or rebuilding.
- Familiarity with interfaith, women’s leadership, peace-building, or social justice work.
- Knowledge of member-based fundraising strategies.
