For decades, MCIP has partnered with schools, families, and communities to support youth through mentoring, education, and leadership development—meeting young people where they are and walking alongside them toward long-term success.

Position Overview

MCIP is seeking dedicated, paid mentors to join our Intensive Summer Mentoring Initiative, serving at-promise middle school youth ages 10–14 from DC Public Schools.

This is a high-engagement, relationship-centered role designed for individuals who understand that consistency, trust, and accountability are essential to youth development. Mentors support young people who may be navigating academic challenges, social-emotional needs, or exposure to community stressors—and who benefit most from stable, caring adult relationships over the summer break.

Mentoring sessions take place five days a week at a DC Public School site, providing a structured, familiar, and supportive daytime environment. The program is supplemented by planned field trips and weekend excursions, offering youth safe opportunities to build confidence, explore the city, and strengthen group bonds.

The program is structured, supervised, and grounded in best practices commonly found in intensive mentoring models across the District, emphasizing credible relationships, social-emotional skill-building, positive identity development, and clear expectations.

Program Structure

• Cohort Model: Youth participate in separate boys’ and girls’ mentoring cohorts, creating developmentally appropriate, affirming spaces.
• Alignment: MCIP strongly prefers mentors whose gender identity aligns with the cohort they support, as this has proven effective in building trust, openness, and engagement among middle-grade youth.
• Inclusivity: This preference reflects program design and youth well-being and is not intended to be exclusionary; all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Mentors will:

• Build consistent, trusting relationships with a small group of middle-grade youth.
• Facilitate structured mentoring sessions Monday through Friday mornings and early afternoons at a DC public school site.
• Lead and support youth through:
  • Social-emotional learning activities
  • Emotional regulation and self-awareness development
  • Decision-making and goal-setting
  • Conflict resolution and communication skills
• Participate in field trips and weekend excursions as scheduled.
• Model professionalism, respect, and healthy boundaries.
• Engage in training, supervision, and reflective practice.
• Communicate regularly with MCIP staff and follow program expectations.

Schedule & Time Commitment

• Dates: June 22, 2026 through July 31, 2026
• Hours: 25 hours per week
• Daily Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM (5 hours a day)
• Extras: Occasional Saturdays or weekends for field trips, excursions, family engagement, or special events.
• Commitment: Full availability for the duration of the 6-week summer program is required.

Compensation

• $25/hour – College students currently enrolled
• $35/hour – College graduates and professionals
• Paid training and ongoing support included.

Qualifications

We encourage applicants who are:

• College students (sophomore level or above) or college graduates.
• Interested in education, youth development, social work, psychology, public policy, juvenile justice, or community leadership.
• Comfortable working with at-promise youth in structured, school-based settings.
• Culturally responsive, reflective, and equity-minded.
• Reliable, consistent, and able to maintain clear boundaries.
• Open to coaching, feedback, and continuous learning.
• Prior mentoring or youth-serving experience is strongly preferred but not required.
