    Descripción

    The Statewide Advocacy Director will lead the organization’s advancement of policy and practices that promote housing justice for all with special attention to low-income Texans. This role will collaborate with the Executive Director, staff, and directly impacted community leaders to design and implement a statewide advocacy strategy that centers fair housing and incorporates innovative strategies to implement Texas Housers’ legislative agenda.

    The Statewide Advocacy Director may supervise interns/staff and will serve as a member of Texas Housers’ management team.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement statewide policy and advocacy campaigns and initiatives.
    • Lead and manage the organization’s legislative agenda at the state capitol during the Texas legislative session.
    • Lead, manage, and facilitate the Statewide Housing Advocacy Coalition (SHAC).
    • Identify and facilitate opportunities for directly impacted community leaders to actively participate in local, state and federal advocacy.
    • Follow and track changes to local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and rules that impact housing for low-income Texans.
    • Research, track, and provide recommendations and testimony during legislative session aligned with Texas Housers’ legislative priorities.
    • Communicate the organization’s policy positions in other venues as appropriate.
    • Plan and execute advocacy events such as Capitol Day and Congressional Office Visits.
    • Provide education and technical assistance to elected officials and their staff regarding Texas Housers’ legislative priorities.
    • Participate in development and fundraising efforts.
    • Collaborate extensively with Texas Housers’ power building, research, policy, and communications staff, as well as many others in the organization’s network to advance these activities.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

    Required Qualifications

    • Experience working at least one legislative session either with an advocacy group or within a Legislative office, or other comparable experience (please define).
    • Demonstrated knowledge of housing justice issues and housing challenges that low-income Texans may experience.
    • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining coalitions, collaborative decision making, and process development.
    • Grace and diplomacy in building relationships with different types of stakeholders, including community partners and government leaders.
    • Critical analytical skills to understand the political, social, and financial dynamics affecting the housing landscape for low-income individuals and families throughout the state.
    • Commitment to anti-racism and power sharing strategies.
    • Excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders, including especially directly impacted, low-income community members.
    • Detail oriented, ability to manage multiple projects.
    • Must be based in Central Texas

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience managing diverse staff, specifically those with lived or living experience of poverty.
    • Demonstrated ability to read and understand complex legal and policy documents.
    • Experience leading community organizing and/or community power building initiatives.
    • Presented at state or national conferences, forums, and/or meetings.
