    About Us

    The Petey Greene Program supports the academic and career goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality tutoring and other educational programs while serving to educate our volunteers and the public on the manifest injustice in our carceral system.

    We envision a world in which all people directly impacted by the criminal legal system have access to high-quality educational programming. The Petey Greene Program will inspire our alumni to become advocates and leaders in transforming the criminal legal system.

    The PGP operates the largest multi-state volunteer tutoring program for currently and formerly incarcerated people. Since our founding in 2008, we’ve served over 21,000 students across more than 140 programming sites—including correctional and reentry programs—placed over 9,000 volunteers, and partnered with 40+ universities in seven states and Washington, D.C.

    The PGP is headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, but the majority of our 30 employees work in a hybrid arrangement in their respective regions.

    The Opportunity

    The Petey Greene Program is in the midst of the implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that will guide our work from through 2028. With a focus on sustainable growth and programmatic expansion in the coming years, the Associate Director of Human Resources and Operations will play a critical role in developing and supporting the internal functioning of the Petey Greene Program to support this organizational vision. With a growing staff located across multiple states, the Associate Director will be responsible for supporting the mission of the Petey Greene Program by leading recruitment and onboarding processes for new hires, managing and improving human resources processes, serving as a direct human resources support to all PGP staff members, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations across the organization.

    The Petey Greene Program is committed to working continuously to ensure that the organization is welcoming and supportive of staff members of all identities, especially system-impacted and formerly incarcerated people whose direct knowledge of the problems are necessary to achieving educational justice. To this end, the Associate Director will be responsible for providing thorough training and support to staff members of all backgrounds and will play a crucial role in ensuring that PGP’s internal operations are mission-aligned and contribute to an inclusive and trauma-informed workplace.

    The Associate Director of Human Resources & Operations reports to the Executive Director of Operations. The role is hybrid and candidates must be able to travel to the PGP’s office in Princeton, NJ at least twice per month.

    Key Responsibilities

    Human Resources

    • Lead recruitment and onboarding for new hires as well as manage offboarding processes
    • Train and support new hires in navigating benefits enrollment, PGP’s workplace policies, etc
    • Maintain and update employee records and HR database in compliance with legal standards
    • Administer benefits, time-off tracking, and payroll coordination in collaboration with the Finance department and external vendors
    • Serve as a resource for all PGP staff regarding employee relations, conflict resolution, staff retention, and workplace well-being
    • Coordinate performance management processes and internal or external professional development initiatives as well as tracking
    • Develop policies, resources, and support processes specifically for onboarding and supporting the professional development of PGP interns and fellows
    • Maintain compliance with employment laws and non-profit best practices across all states where the PGP has programming and/or staff (currently 10 states with plans for expansion)
    • Collaborate in developing policies, processes, and resources to ensure consistent, efficient, and compliant HR operations at the PGP
    • Support development and implementation of organizational policies and processes that are mission-aligned and contribute to an inclusive and trauma-informed workplace

    Operations & Administration

    • Manage PGP’s office space contracts, ensuring the smooth operation of office systems, as well as inventory management and orders, at PGP’s Headquarters in Princeton, NJ as well as coworking office spaces across PGP regions
    • Manage organizational subscriptions, licenses, and vendor relationships
    • Oversee basic IT coordination, including onboarding and support for staff systems access and equipment
    • Support risk management and compliance processes, including maintaining and monitoring insurance policies and records as well as data security policies
    • Collaborate with the Finance department on contract management, expense tracking, timesheets, and budget adherence.
    • Coordinate organization-wide internal communications and meeting logistics as needed

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience in HR and/or operations, preferably at a non-profit
    • Working knowledge of HR practices, employment law, and nonprofit administration.
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace and basic IT tools.
    • High level of discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
    • Attention to detail, follow-through and extremely organized.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Demonstrated experience in fostering inclusive, equitable workplaces.
    • Ability and willingness to operate both big picture and strategically, as well as in the weeds when necessary
    • A commitment to social justice, racial equity, and the rights of currently and formerly incarcerated people

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience coaching or supporting early-career professionals in human resources-related processes (e.g. benefits enrollment, paycheck review, etc)
    • Experience developing resources, policies, or processes to be broadly implemented
    • Professional HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR)
    • Proficiency with HR systems or other similar tools
    • Ability to problem solve independently and with a team
