Location: 5800 Tilden Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11203

Pay Rate: $75–$100 per hour (commensurate with experience)

    About the Program

This summer, Uptown Stories is partnering with TRIO to offer a dynamic creative writing workshop designed to support and uplift first-generation and disadvantaged youth. TRIO’s mission is to help students complete high school, pursue higher education, and succeed beyond. This summer program will serve predominantly Haitian Creole 9th and 10th grade students through a joyful, affirming, and skills-building creative writing experience.

    Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate, culturally responsive Teaching Artist with a background in creative writing, youth development, and student-centered pedagogy to lead two back-to-back daily workshop sessions of 15–20 students each. The workshop will culminate in a published print anthology (with a color interior) featuring

student writing. Teaching artists will receive support from Uptown Stories in crafting a flexible, responsive curriculum focused on two different genres taught over two-week periods (e.g. poetry, memoir, speculative fiction, etc.).

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and teach an engaging, inclusive curriculum in partnership with Uptown Stories
    • Facilitate two 90-minute workshop sessions per day (9:00–10:30 AM & 10:30 AM–12:00 PM)
    • Use culturally affirming strategies to build a supportive creative community
    • Support students through the writing, editing, and revision process
    • Collaborate with Uptown Stories on preparing student work for publication
    • Arrive prepared and on time each day; use 12:00–1:00 PM for reflection, documentation, and prep
    • Attend virtual onboarding and curriculum planning sessions prior to July 7

    Qualifications

    • Experience teaching creative writing to high school students, especially first-gen youth
    • Familiarity with strengths-based, trauma-informed, or culturally relevant pedagogy
    • A passion for writing, storytelling, and youth voice
    • Strong classroom management and communication skills
    • Availability for the full duration of the program
    • Haitian Creole language skills or cultural fluency a plus, but not required
