Make the Road Action (MRA), a 501(c)(4) organization, is committed to building power for justice in immigrant and low-income working-class communities of color. MRA operates in five states - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. We work to create social change, connect voters to the candidates and issues that are most important to them, and work hands-on in a fast-paced environment to create long-term impact in the communities that need it most.
Make the Road States (MRstates), a 501(c)(3) organization, is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations that serve to uplift the voices of working-class immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color.
Current Opening:
The Communications Associate supports the Director(s) in implementing the organization’s actions and campaigns across digital platforms and media outlets. This role involves creating high-impact content, monitoring digital channels for mission alignment, and establishing a cohesive brand identity. A key component of this position involves field-based communications, and managing media presence during community outreach.
Key Responsibilities but not limited to:
- Assist in writing testimonies, statements, media advisories, and press releases
- Create and promote materials for social media (videos, photos, infographics, etc.) and provide real-time content during organizational events (live-tweeting, Facebook livestreams).
- In partnership with the Director(s), engage and organize communities through PR strategies and grow the organization’s presence in traditional media.
- Ensure consistency with brand identity across all assets and maintain organized press and media archives.
- Support in managing responses to press and general inquiries
- Support presentations, events, and writing for the organization's departments
- Drafting and editing communications collateral, including emails and landing pages.
- Traveling to and from actions/events is required.
- Maintaining calendars and appointments for interviews, events, and planning actions related to PR amplification strategies.
- Report on campaign results per action and monthly to create strategies constantly to improve reach and coverage for the organization.
- Support and participate in on-the-ground canvassing efforts.
- Serve as a communications lead during field actions to manage and support media
- Work with the Director to provide real-time guidance on language and messaging for staff and members in the event of media presence during outreach.
Member organizing and leadership development:
- Support the training of staff and members for media and PR opportunities to grow the organization’s public voice.
- Proactively develop strategies to increase membership participation and recruit/manage digital volunteers.
- Maintain and moderate community spaces for members i.e. Facebook, WhatsApp, or and/or other media platforms
Requirements:
- Eligibility to work in the U.S.
- Bilingual in Spanish/English (both written and verbal).
- Commitment to collective action and community organizing.
- Experience in a multicultural work environment.
- Availability for regular evenings and occasional weekends.
- 1-2 years of experience in marketing, communications, community engagement, journalism, or related fields.
- Proficiency in crafting content for social media and PR.
- One year of experience using social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram) for social justice campaigns.
- Comfort with multitasking and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to social and economic justice.
- Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
- Familiarity with media outreach and the news industry overall.

Salary and Benefits:
MRStates offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $57,260 to $66,512
