Texas Human Rights Coordinator

The National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to implement our Border Organizing Initiative, a project that is aimed at building capacity for human rights organizing and advocacy for migrants, refugees, and border communities.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) is a 38 year old center for human rights education and advocacy, dedicated to defending and expanding the rights of immigrants and refugees. NNIRR affirms the right of mobility, that migrants’ rights are human rights, and that no international border can be a zone of exception when it comes to human rights protections. To accomplish that, we work with local, national, and global civil society organizations to urge governments to fulfill their human rights obligations to provide for the safety and due process of all migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. We work with grassroots immigrant rights groups, racial and climate justice leaders, as well as labor and faith-based organizations, to redress the humanitarian crises created by immigration enforcement. We seek just, long-term immigration policy reform with migrants’ human rights at the core of all policy interventions. Through our program in El Paso, Texas, we are expanding our human rights work on the US-Mexico border by partnering with grassroots leaders and organizations to build platforms for capacity-building, knowledge exchange, and political action in a region that has been ground zero for anti-immigrant, hyper-militarized immigration policies for decades.

THE POSITION - Border Region Human Rights Coordinator

Supervised by: NNIRR Director and border advisory team

Location: Remote (must be based in a Texas border community)

Contract Term: Immediately through Dec 2026 (with likely extension)

Compensation: 75% (30 hrs/wk) of $60,000 base salary, with potential to become full-time.

Scope of Work key responsibilities:

The part-time Coordinator implements our Texas Border Organizing Initiative, a project that builds the capacity

for local human rights organizing and advocacy for border communities using NNIRR’s BRIDGE curriculum

(“Building a Race and Education Dialogue in the Global Economy”), our popular education approach. Working

under the direction of the NNIRR’s director and border advisory team the Coordinator’s responsibilities include:

• Help plan and have primary responsibility for facilitation of NNIRR’s Grassroots Human Rights Institutes.
• Bring together local grassroots organizers in border communities for intersectional popular education trainings aimed at cultivating solidarity, deepening analysis, and fueling local political power.
• Lead and coordinate NNIRR’s Trainers’ Circles — composed of organizers and practitioners across multiple sectors (immigrant rights, labor, voter engagement, environmental justice, reproductive justice, etc.)
• Help border communities organize and collaborate with rapid response networks.
• Contribute to NNIRR’s communications strategy to lift migrant rights issues at the border.
• Join and contribute to webinars, conference calls, and advocacy activities related to border issues.

Required Qualifications

Bilingual in Spanish and English (spoken and written).

Minimum of 5 years of experience in community organizing and advocacy.

Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, training design, and facilitation.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and Google Sheets.

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Experience in promoting work through digital and social media platforms.

Additional Information

This is a part-time position at .75 FTE (30 hr/wk), with potential to become 100% time.

Consultant must be based in a Texas border community.

Some regional and national travel may be required, compensated by NNIRR.

Consultant must provide their own workspace and equipment to work remotely.
