Statewide Community Organizing and Power Building Director will lead and align the statewide community organizing and power building strategy for Texas Housers. This role will collaborate with the Executive Director, staff, and directly impacted community leaders to develop and implement community organizing and engagement strategies to build relationships with local elected officials, partner organizations, directly impacted community members and other community stakeholders.
The Statewide Community Organizing and Power Building Director will supervise up to three staff and will serve as a member of the Texas Housers’ management team.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop, implement and oversee the statewide community organizing strategy for the organization.
- Determine where and when to “stand up” and deploy Texas Housers community organizing staff resources in local communities.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with mission aligned statewide and local community partners, coalitions, elected officials and community stakeholders.
- Develop, lead and maintain a statewide coalition of grassroots organizers.
- Lead, manage and facilitate a monthly virtual meeting of grassroots organizers for the purpose of information and resource sharing, strategic partnership, and collective advocacy.
- Reimagine and redesign Houser Academy initiative and provide strategic direction as to how it fits into the organization’s statewide community organizing/power building strategy.
- Provide mutually accountable supervision to local community organizing and engagement staff throughout the state.
- Collaborate with Executive Director, leadership team, and board of directors to implement fundraising strategies, specifically national, state and local grant opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Operations and Development Manager to develop and maintain organizational policies, procedures and practices related to staff recruitment, retention and professional development.
- Collaborate with Deputy Director to develop strategies and techniques to center the voices and experiences of directly impacted Texans in the organization’s policy and legislative advocacy efforts
- Represent the organization in community forums, public meetings, conferences, academic setting, and press engagements.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of successful community organizing action
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders with a special addition to directly impacted, low-income community members
- 3+ years experiencing in housing justice advocacy or community organizing
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and/ or campaigns
- Demonstrated knowledge of housing justice issues and housing challenges that low-income Texans may experience.
- Demonstrated success in building and maintaining coalitions, collaborative decision making, and process development.
- Grace and diplomacy in building relationships with different types of stakeholders, including community partners and government leaders.
- Critical analytical skills to understand the political, social, and financial dynamics affecting the housing landscape for low-income individuals and families throughout the state.
- Commitment to anti-racism and power sharing strategies.
- Excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders, including especially directly impacted, low-income community members.
- Detail oriented, ability to manage multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years experience managing diverse staff teams, specifically those with lived or living experience of poverty.
- Strong proficient in Spanish/ English (verbal and written)
