    The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a Legal Administrative Assistant in our Atlanta, GA office. This individual will join our Administrative team and report to the Georgia Office Manager. The Legal Administrative Assistant will be a key partner for three attorneys, primarily providing legal and administrative support for the Energy team. SELC’s Legal Administrative Assistants play a vital role in sustaining the effectiveness of our program work.     The ideal candidate will have an understanding of, or interest in, state utility regulation and public policy with experience in areas such as energy, sustainability, or law. This person may also find joy in analyzing charts, graphs, and spreadsheets.

    SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, non-exempt position and employees must reside in our region.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Supports the Georgia Energy team by submitting comments and expert testimony, preparing for hearings, and tracking filings from multiple parties at the Georgia Public Service Commission.
    • Proofreads, edits, formats, redacts and finalizes comment letters, pleadings, testimony, and other legal filings.
    • Conducts substantial factual research utilizing a variety of resources including internal records, newspaper and media sources, scientific reports, utility and government websites. Analyzes and summarizes scientific research in support of SELC’s legislative and regulatory agency work.
    • Assists with the logistical and evidentiary preparations for judicial and administrative proceedings (including depositions, mediations, hearings and trials), researching local court rules, calendaring deadlines, and other legal support tasks.
    • Assists with expert retainer agreements and tracking invoices, as well as quarterly budget reporting.
    • Provides general administrative support including scheduling meetings, booking travel, and submitting invoices and expenses.
    • Assists with PowerPoint presentations for both internal and external presentations.
    • Participates in and takes notes during conference calls and meetings as needed.
    • Communicates regularly with clients, partner groups and may occasionally represent SELC in various stakeholder meetings.
    • Assists in the collection and review of documents and records obtained through public records, including authoring summaries or memoranda.
    • Assists fellow legal assistants and administrative staff with daily tasks in a collaborative environment.

    Required Qualifications:

    • A minimum of three years of legal assistant or legal support experience.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including formatting and formulas in Excel spreadsheets, advanced word processing skills in Word, and creating professional Power Point presentations.
    • Ability to efficiently navigate Adobe Acrobat, including editing PDFs.
    • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
    • Highly dependable and punctual.
    • Ability to work well both independently and within several different teams.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines.
    • Cheerful outlook and enthusiasm for both administrative support and substantive tasks.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with energy law and utility commission work, combined with a foundational understanding of electricity regulation and energy policy.
    • A college degree is preferred, but an equivalent amount of work experience will be considered.

    Compensation & Benefits:

    SELC offers compensation competitive with other leading national environmental nonprofits and provides an excellent benefits package. The starting hourly wage for this position is $26.93 – $31.68. The annualized compensation is equal to $56,000 – $65,900. For more details about our benefits package, please visit our Careers page.

    SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer.

    SELC will also provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position, up to a specific dollar amount and contingent on the move being at least 50 miles from the current primary address.

    Parental Leave: SELC employees are entitled to 12 weeks of paid parental leave following childbirth or adoption. The leave can be taken up to one year after childbirth or adoption and can be broken up in any manner that best accommodates the needs of the family. Once available parental leave has been used, parents of new children have the additional option of requesting to return to work on a reduced schedule for up to 12 weeks.
