    Home Office: Seattle/Hybrid: Required in the office 3 days a week & 2 days remote. Office hours: 8:30- 4:30

    The Mockingbird Society (TMS) is a non-partisan advocacy organization focused on transforming foster care and ending youth homelessness. We do this by creating, supporting, and advocating for racially equitable, healthy environments that develop youth and young adults at risk of or experiencing foster care or homelessness.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Communications Coordinator supports the administrative and operational effectiveness of TMS’s communications efforts. This includes content creation for various platforms, social media management, email marketing, website management, brand messaging, and media relations. The position directly reports to the Director of Communications.

    Central to the Coordinator’s role is the ability to manage multiple projects and department functions simultaneously, with high attention to detail, strong collaboration skills, and a commitment to advancing the organization’s approach to communications through a youth-centered racial equity and social justice lens. The successful candidate will be highly organized, strategic, creative, and experienced with managing and creating content for various communications platforms. They will be a self-starter able to work independently, within the team, and cross-functionally with other departments and youth participants. Additionally, the Coordinator will support the Director of Communications and the Development & Communications Department to manage large-scale campaigns, events and projects.

    Tasks include, but are not limited to setting and monitoring deadlines, drafting materials (including social posts, marketing emails, organizational marketing materials and campaign copy), and attending to other logistical and operational needs for the department.

    This is a hybrid position; the Communications Coordinator is expected to be available occasional nights and weekends for fundraising and programmatic events and/or meetings.

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Content Creation

    o Write, edit, and proofread culturally responsive copy for the web, newsletters, campaigns, and the Mockingbird Times.

    o Partner with youth staff/participants to co?create content that amplifies lived experience and racial?justice narratives.

    • Social Media Planning & Management

    o Build monthly/annual calendars aligned with advocacy milestones (e.g., Youth Advocacy Day, legislative hearings).

    o Produce multi?media posts (graphics, Reels, threads) that elevate youth voices and mobilize supporters.

    • Email Marketing

    o Lead efforts to create marketing emails, newsletters, and targeted communications to organizational stakeholders.

    o Track open/engagement rates; adjust strategies to increase reach among BIPOC audiences and young people.

    • Marketing Materials

    o Support the creation of organizational marketing materials and campaign materials.

    o Collaborate across departments to ensure consistency and accuracy and equitable language in all marketing materials.

    • Media Relations

    o Occasionally support with stewarding relationships with the media, coordinating media interviews, and supporting young people in media opportunities.’

    o Draft press advisories, arrange interviews, and coach young spokespeople, centering consent, safety, and trauma?informed storytelling.

    • Brand Management

    o Ensure that communications and marketing materials uphold brand guidelines and support other departments in maintaining brand consistency.

    • Website Management

    o Support all departments with simple website updates, ensuring that all information on the website is accurate and current.

    o Assist with larger scale projects for the organizational website as needed.

    • Mockingbird Times

    o Partner with young people in reviewing and, when needed, editing their articles, poetry and artwork for our youth-driven publication, the Mockingbird Times.

    o Support with the overall management of the Mockingbird Times program, creation of each issue, marketing for the publication, and distribution strategies.

    • Administrative/Additional Support

    o Assist the Director of Communications with administrative tasks and special projects as needed.

    o Support with analytics tracking across all digital platforms and creation of regular communications reports.

    o Occasionally works with and supports Development Team with development and event-specific content and messaging.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field or equivalent experience.
    • 2+ years of experience in communications, social media management, or relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice, preferably in youth?serving, advocacy, or BIPOC?led spaces.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, social media management platforms, communications data analytics tools, and graphic design tools.
    • Experience planning and executing successful marketing campaigns.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to engage a wide range of audiences and stakeholders.
    • High attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
    • A passion for the organization's mission and commitment to advancing its goals.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    • Upon date of hire, must be able to pass a Washington State and national criminal history check.
    • Access to reliable transportation, a valid WA state driver’s license, and adequate insurance
    • Frequent travel to Olympia, WA required during the legislative session.
    • Occasional travel to partner locations and conferences.
    • Compliance with all agency policies regarding COVID-19 as well as state-mandated vaccination policy.

    The starting hourly rate range for this position is $20.00 -$25.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. In addition, The Mockingbird Society offers:
