Position Title: Senior Culture and Narrative Content Producer

Position Location: Candidates are welcome to apply from across the U.S. Those that are near a Popular Democracy office in DC or Brooklyn may be asked to work from the office one or two days/week if necessary. Applicants outside of those areas may be required to travel to a Popular Democracy office occasionally.

Popular Democracy is seeking a Senior Culture and Narrative Content Producer to join the Communications and Narrative Department. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Popular Democracy works to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with 50 affiliates in 34 states and DC to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We are seeking a Senior Cultural and Narrative Content Producer that will produce graphic, video and web content that builds narrative power with targeted communities. This position will use popular education, storytelling, and distributed organizing strategies to influence how people see and understand the world around them, to immerse them in a shared vision for the future, and to inspire action. The role will also amplify our brand by creating compelling content to be used across the organization that communicates a powerful brand story and consistent brand identity. All Culture and Narrative efforts will move in deep partnership with colleagues across the programmatic departments of Fightback, Organizing, and Communications & Narrative.

It is expected that the Senior Culture and Narrative Content Producer will travel and attend in-person trainings, meetings, actions and events approximately 1-2 times a month.

We estimate that candidates will have about 10 years of relevant experience, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.

The Senior Culture and Narrative Content Producer will report to the Director of Narrative and Culture.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Senior Culture and Narrative Content Producer will:

• Produce multimedia content in English and Spanish to make narrative interventions that challenge existing power structures and help create and immerse people in a shared vision for our future.
• Develop and lead narrative strategies that expand social and political imagination, thereby increasing our ability to shape public discourse, influence our society’s beliefs, behaviors and values, and build momentum for transformative change.
• Create compelling video, graphic and web content that breaks down complex issues and information for wide audiences and fosters collective action for social change.
• Support the development of branding, design, and storytelling strategies, maintaining brand consistency across projects.
• Lead story collection and storytelling initiatives across affiliates, allies and partners, ensuring alignment with our narrative strategy.
• Manage web properties and implement web strategies, including development, maintenance, and performance optimization to ensure existing and future websites are helping achieve organizational goals and providing optimal user experience for our target audiences.
• Lead and coordinate content production at events and actions, including shooting, filming, and coordinating photographers, videographers, and other contractors; and ensure we have strong visuals such as branded signage, merchandise, slide decks and Zoom backgrounds.
• Determine video and still image selections, organizing our image and video database, and ensuring distribution to our staff, affiliate organizations and press.
• Manage livestream contractors to ensure high-quality visuals on live streams of webinars, remote and in person events.
• Leverage our momentum by developing and implementing distributed strategies to grow reach and impact.
• Implement systems to track growth and assess how we’re shifting public discourse.
• Support fundraising and donor engagement through events, selling merchandise and other initiatives.
• Develop narrative power trainings and toolkits for affiliates.
• Other related duties as needed and assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

• Be a creative and innovative thinker who balances bold ideas with practical execution;
• Be a natural storyteller who understands the power of personal and collective narratives to drive change;
• Have a strong understanding and familiarity with visual branding and design;
• Have a keen eye for aesthetics and attention to detail;
• Have 3-5 years of experience producing videos, graphics, websites, and other creative content for social justice and organizing purposes;
• Be experienced at developing creative strategy in advocacy, political, or movement contexts;
• Have experience working hand-in-hand with organizers to integrate offline and online engagement tactics;
• Have strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks, set priorities, effectively manage time and meet deadlines, and proven ability to work in the context of rapid response moments;
• Bring a strong racial equity analysis and experience in communicating about Black, brown and working communities;
• Be experienced with Canva Pro and Adobe Creative Cloud and ability to support others in their use of those programs;
• Fluent Spanish language skills preferred but not required;
• A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.

Hiring Process:

Candidates should expect to participate in two rounds of group interviews and a job simulation exercise. Final candidates will be asked to provide references.
