About Oakland Promise
Oakland Promise’s (“OP”) mission: mobilize Oakland to expand economic mobility through cradle-to-career achievement. OP is both a direct service organization and a backbone organization: providing direct services, convening across local and national partners, and regranting funds to community organizations.
OP direct services are available to young learners (from newborns to college graduates) and their families who reside in Oakland. We offer financial assets, financial education, and college and career readiness to help students and families navigate the path to higher education and pursue careers of their choosing. OP achieves its work across three domains: Early Learning, Kindergarten to 12th Grade, and College & Career. OP applies a three-tiered approach to delivering and coordinating domain services – Citywide (Tier 1), Income-eligible (Tier 2), and Place-based work (Tier 3) – to ensure resources are concentrated on those furthest from opportunity.
Beyond direct service, OP funds community-based organizations doing critical work for Oakland's kids and families, builds Oakland nonprofit capacity through technical assistance, and drives systems change by collaborating with partners positioned to move at scale. OP serves as the lead agency of place-based collective impact work in an East Oakland Promise Neighborhood. OP is also one of two implementation partners for Oakland Children’s Initiative (OCI) Fund, a voter-approved 2018 charter amendment that generates funds through a parcel tax for early childhood education and college access programs in Oakland.
