New York Restoration Project (NYRP) believes that access to nature is a fundamental human right. We work to ensure that all New Yorkers have equitable access to green space. For over 30 years, NYRP has invested in and stewarded parks and gardens throughout the city’s five boroughs to strengthen communities.

    Position Summary

In 2026, NYRP is seeking a Seasonal Public Programming Assistant (Assistant), reporting to the Public Programming Manager, to support its broad portfolio of public programming. In the Spring, the Assistant will help implement a series of 20+ Tree Giveaway events in coordination with partners throughout the five boroughs. For the remainder of the season, they will help develop and deliver a wide variety of programming at 50+ NYRP-operated community gardens and parks, including arts and cultural events, health and fitness classes, back-to-school giveaways, holiday celebrations, cooking demonstrations, and more. This work will include staffing events, communicating with constituents and partners, as well as creating and disseminating promotional materials. The Assistant will also support general departmental operations, which will include some work on Urban Agriculture programming (i.e. public workshops and volunteer days), larger events, and other special initiatives.

To be successful in this role, a candidate must be detail oriented and organized, experienced in event coordination or community engagement, and have excellent communication skills. The work is people centered and hands-on, so the Assistant should be eager to work in the field and build connections with all manner of NYRP constituents. The Urban Agriculture & Public Programming Department is small and highly collaborative, but the dispersed nature of the work means that the Assistant will be called on to work independently and will need to juggle multiple projects at once. Candidates should be skilled time managers and excited about the chance to strike a balance between administrative computer-based work and in-the-field program implementation. The Assistant will often be called on to deliver materials and supplies to various sites using NYRP vehicles, so a valid and clean driver’s license is an absolute must.

    Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Facilitate and support a range of public programming, including Tree Giveaways, arts and cultural events, health and fitness classes, back-to-school giveaways, holiday celebrations, Urban Agriculture workshops, volunteer days, and more
    • Coordinate program logistics, especially the pickup and delivery of event materials to sites all throughout the five boroughs
    • Create and distribute promotional materials for events, set up online registration forms, and perform other event-related admin tasks
    • Work with colleagues and NYRP constituents to review external event requests and schedule programming
    • Communicate with partners and the general public, supporting the Public Programming Manager in responding to inquiries as needed
    • Document the work by taking photos, entering info into internal databases, and contributing to other record-keeping systems
    • Maintain excellent communication with the Public Programming Manager and the Director of Urban Agriculture & Public Programming
    • Help keep program equipment and supplies organized and well-maintained
    • Collaborate on big program events throughout the season, including a Gardeners Gathering, Fall Festival, and more

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • At least one year of relevant experience working in event coordination, community engagement, or public programming
    • Direct experience with black, indigenous, and people of color communities (personal, lived experience or professional, work experience)
    • A valid and clean NY state driver’s license (mandatory)
    • Able to lift 50 lbs; embraces the physical nature of this work (i.e. unloading trees, moving heavy A/V equipment)
    • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
    • Proficient in MS Office and similar web-based tools
    • Excellent communication skills (bilingual Spanish, Chinese, or Bengali preferred)
    • Flexible team player, capable of both working independently and collaborating with colleagues
    • Organized, enthusiastic, and a resourceful problem-solver who is eager to learn
